Region B Championships Highlights May 24, 2012

A total of 7 meet records were set at Thursday's Region B Outdoor Track & Field Championships at East Rockingham High School including a pair set by both Amelia County's Jasmine Mitchell and Strasburg's Katlyn Ayers. Mitchell scored 47 points total among 6 events including meet record performances in the high jump with a 5'4.50" clearance and a 56.49 clocking in the 400 meter dash. Mitchell also won the long jump with a leap of 18'4" and finished as a runner-up in the 100 meter dash and 800 meter run.   It took a meet record run from Strasburg's Katlyn Ayers to keep Mitchell from fourth individual title on the day. Ayers earlier battled in the 1600 meter run with this fall's Group A state cross country champion Hannah Rose of Wilson Memorial and received some redemption from her state cross country meet loss with a meet record victory of 5:08.88. Ayers again faced major competition later in the 800 from Amelia County's Mitchell and came out in first place again breaking a 14 year old meet record with a time of 2:19.20.   Strasburg made a clean sweep of the team titles for boys and girls with Ayers and thrower Taylor Cockerille (discus winner and shot runner-up) leading the girls to a team score of 81 points. Strasburg boys (52 pts) squeezed out a one point win over Stonewall Jackson (51 pts) as a sweep of the distance races and the 30 points from those wins by Anthony Wallis in the 1600 (4:33.72) and 3200 (10:07.39) in addition to Strasburg teammate Dylan Callaway running away with gold in the 800 meter run by a resounding four seconds with his time of 1:59.78.   The boys 200 meter dash was the fastest race ever in meet history with two runners breaking the old meet record and the third place finishing tying the old all-time meet best of 22.00. In any other year, Dan River sophomore Antwane Ferrell would be the regional champion with his 22.00 clocking but had to settle for third behind Altavista's Justin Brown rolling a swift 21.62 performance for the title and followed by Nelson County's Rodrell Smith (2nd, 21.95) for runner-up. Brown also took first in the 100 meter dash earlier with a 10.82 clocking, while Ferrell ran a leg on a meet record shattering 4x100 meter relay for Dan River at 43.04. Both 4x100 records went down as the Gretna girls lowered the time set by Appomattox County one year ago down to 50.49.   Chatham's Tori McKenzie was a double champion in the sprints with times of 12.24 and 25.64 respectively in the 100 and 200 meter dash. McKenzie is the reigning Group A state champion in both events and looking to match or better her performance from a year ago when she ran personal best times of 11.96 and 24.99 in state competition. William Campbell boys have some talented jumpers as showcased by the 6'7" clearance from Maxie Crews in the high jump and a leap of 45'11" by Marques Adams in the triple jump.   Region B Championships Complete Results Region B Championships National Elites (17)
