Octavia Rinehardt was running so smooth and effortlessly Thursday afternoon that it looked like she was taking a stroll through the park. Rinehardt, a Tallwood senior, was running in Bells Mill Park, but she was far from strolling. No, she was dominating as she breezed around the course in a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 18.10 seconds to win her first Eastern Region cross country title. “I just wanted to run my race and go for a good time more than anything,” said Rinehardt, who won by 25 seconds. The Eastern Region Meet will have four heavily favored teams and individuals in today's meet at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. Boys race is at 3:00 PM with girls to follow at 3:30 PM.

Photo by Ted Plunkett Gloucester’s cross country teams go into today’s Eastern Region meet in Chesapeake after a sweep of team and individual honors in last week’s Peninsula District meet. The girls won their fifth straight team championship, and junior Hannah Varnell outdueled Hampton’s Kristina Woodard to win the individual race. Douglas Fenstermacher easily won the boys race for his second straight individual title, and the Dukes’ depth paid off as the team earned its fourth championship in five years. "Both teams are really strong," said coach Heidi Overbay, who hopes both teams qualify for next weekend’s state Group AAA meet. Should both make it, that would be a first for Gloucester. Read full story...
