At the Newport News Invitational, two common trends were Gloucester individuals and Maggie Walker teams winning. Gloucester boasted the race champions in both A divisions with Doug Fenstermacher winning fairly unchallenged in 16:09, while Varnell had to use her AAU Junior Olympic 1500 national champion speed to pull away from the Maggie Walker duo of Clarissa Schick (2nd, 18:47) and Susannah Piersol (3rd, 18:52) in a winning time of 18:43. The Maggie Walker girls were not only impressive up front with their times, but from the top down through their seven with a team average of 19:30 in the A race and team score of 24 points. Coach Jim Holdren nearly had a total of eight Maggie Walker runners under 21 minutes with their seventh in the A race at 21 flat and their eighth runner in the B race just under 21 minutes as a race runner-up. The Maggie Walker boys also claimed the team title in the A division.
