Anneka Wilson scores 26 pts in distance triple Photo by John Herzog The Fork Union boys won a 21st consecutive VISAA state outdoor title, while the Liberty Christian Academy girls kept Potomac School from a second straight whilte despite a strong triple by distance runner Anneka Wilson (pictured above by John Herzog). Wilson won the 1600 (5:14.40) and 3200 (11:33.95) and placed third in the 800 in between the two races. Megan Burgraff was Liberty Christian's lone individual winner in the 400 meter dash at 59.47, but her second place finish in the 800 as well as the three second place finishes and 300 meter hurdles (46.08) victory by teammate Christina Mitchell helped LCA build nearly a 30 point lead in the final team standings with 120.50 points. Nefertiti Smith VA #1 39'9.50" TJ Photo by John Herzog The top performance of the meet belonged to freshmen Nefertiti Smith of Norfolk Collegiate as she leaped to a state best mark in the triple jump of 39'9.25". Smith won a total of four state titles in the meet with wins in the high jump (5'4"), long jump (18'0.50"), and 100 meter hurdles (15.50), but she was defeated in the 100 meter dash by Danielle Williams of St. Stephen's and St. Agnes. Williams rolled to first place finishes in the 100 (12.46) and 200 (25.81) meter dash. Photo by John Herzog Fork Union has had many dominating state meets in their 21 year streak of state team championships, but were given an honest challenge this year by the St. Christopher's boys finishing in second with 102 points and 25 1/2 points behind the champions from FUMA (127.50 pts). The field events were very kind to Fork Union with plenty of points to give them a headstart on their competition prior to the bulk of the running events. Austin Ofama in the long jump (22'3") and Kevin Domingue in the high jump (6'4") scored 10 points for Fork Union as event champions, while Ofama nearly won a second event in the triple jump as Trinity's Brandon Patterson matched his best mark of 45'1", but Patterson's next best attempt gave him first over Ofama. Rushing's kick propels him to 1600 win Photo by John Herzog Meanwhile, St. Christopher's had winners in the 800 meter run (Jay Weisbrod - 1:59), pole vault (Sam Hays - 12'6"), and shot put (Alex James - 51'6.50"). One of the more thrilling races of the day was found with the finish in the 1600 meter run with Norfolk Academy's David Rushing blazing his last 200 meters to overtake several runners for a 4:26.23 win.
