The format was simple for day one at the first annual MileStat.com Elite Track Classic. Load up your relays with fresh legs and plan on running fast. Many teams did just that by lowering their season best times significantly while others took down school records as well as blowing out the water any of the existing facility records at Maggie Walker's Jim Holdren Track in Richmond. Two state leading performances came out of the relays on Friday with the Blacksburg boys establishing a new Group AA record in the 4x800 meter relay with a eight second drop from 7:57 indoor best in a 7:49.26. Their splits went 2:00 for Matt Howard, 1:58 for Quinn Hull, 1:55 for George Carter, and 1:53 from Brian Hencke. While the Albemarle boys unquestionably cruised through their qualifying round at the Penn Relays in a solid time of 7:49.39, the quartet from Blacksburg can at least say they ran faster than on this day than the national indoor record holders. Varina placed second to Blacksburg in the 4x800 meter relay in a season best time of 7:59.50 with a 1:55 low anchor from Devin Lacks and came back with three of the same legs roughly an hour later to throw down another impressive time and take over the state leaderboard in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.94. The Meadowbrook girls made a statement in their 4x100 meter relay victory as their winning time of 47.95 was fourth fastest in the state this season and faster than all but two of the Eastern Region schools (Bethel & Western Branch) present at the Penn Relays this past weekend. With speedsters on both opening leg in Angela Harris and closing in Ciarra Morris, Meadowbrook presents a formidable foe to some of the best 4x100 meter relays in the state this outdoor season. The Blacksburg girls were a little off from their normal selves, but still dominated the girls 4x800 meter relay nonetheless in a time of 9:20.91. With a little more competition, Blacksburg girls certainly have the talent to venture under 9:10 this season and challenge the state record of 9:06.00. Henrico snuck out with first place in the boys 4x100 meter relay from section 2 of 3 as their final time of 43.31 usurped seeded section winners Chancellor at 43.51. Saturday expects to be even more thrilling as the meet moves over to Sports Backers Stadium, one of the state's finest track & field facilities. The Penn Relays flavor will be spread at the meet with Championships of America relay finalists Bethel (4x400) and Ocean Lakes girls (4x800) making pit stops in Richmond on the way home to the Tidewater area along with a Marlena Wesh and Taylor Wheaton led Landstown crew. Friday will be reserved only for the relay races as teams will be putting their best on the track to pass the baton along the Jim Holdren Track at Maggie Walker Governor's School. The relays being moved to Friday not only allows for athletes to put more focus on their relays than maybe previously on a single day event, but allows for more individual entries and time in the schedule on Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium. With a 7 hour roundtrip on Friday, Blacksburg will be bringing down their AA state champion caliber relays to Richmond in the 4x800 meter relay. The 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay races appear to be open contests with teams running fresh for the first and possibly only time as expect quite a few state qualifying performances to come out of both events.
Remember that this is only tentative schedule and with likely scratches to reseed and reduce # of sections and a rolling schedule, we could finish much earlier. Not bad if we can pull it off and get a meet done by 4:30 PM on Saturday with 1,200 athletes.
Performance list for the 2009 MileStat.com Elite Track Classic to be held Friday & Saturday, April 24th & 25th in Richmond, VA. 1,203 athletes entered from 70 schools. Revised - April 21st 3:00 PM Updated
To recognize some of the best in the history of the Central Region, this year's first annual MileStat.com Elite Track Classic on April 24th-25th is naming events after some of the most accomplished athletes and coaches (for relays) in the region's history. Hopefully some of these past greats will be making appearances at the meet!
The first annual MileStat.com Elite Track Classic will be held in less than 3 weeks on April 24th and 25th in Richmond, VA. The first day of events on Friday, April 24th will be held at Maggie Walker Governor's School. Only relays (4x800, 4x100, 4x400) will be contested on Friday. The second day of events on Saturday, April 25th will be held at Sports Backers Stadium. All individual events and no relays will be contested on Saturday. The goal is to become the largest and biggest track event in the state of Virginia and allow teams to bring their athletes not only attempting to qualify for state competition, but district competition as well. The relays on Friday should be a big draw as teams will be loading up their relays with fresh legs. Moving the relays to Friday also allows for more individual event entries in the time schedule for Saturday as we are expecting up to 80 entries in each running event. The meet will be catered to team's strengths as coaches will be able to enter as many athletes as they want in a specific event as long as they have all met the standard. The meet will conclude with the always exciting steeplechase!
