Region I Championships: Armstead hurdles & Parrish jumps to 2 titles each MileSplit Staff May 21, 2009

Bilnita Armstead of James Monroe and Krystal Parrish of Park View put on dominant shows at the Region I Championships. Monroe blew away the competition in both hurdle races with clockings of 14.66 and 45.61 respectively in the 300 meter hurdles, while Parrish soared in the jumps with marks of 18'11" in the long jump and 37'3.25" in the triple jump. The James Monroe girls (66 pts) were able to also claim the region title by a narrow margin of two points over Battlefield District rival Chancellor (64 pts).   The Jamestown boys were runaway winners in indoors at the Region I Meet, but had a much closer meet in the outdoor season with their state cross country champion distance squad not at full strength.  The Eagles (76 pts) still got considerable points from the distance events including regional champions Graham Schlickenmeyer in the 800 meter run and Colin Mearns in the 3200 meter run, but their points elsewhere made the difference with Nick Durante winning the pole vault as well as Alex Edwards and Greg Farrell placing high in the sprints.   Chancellor (68 pts) kept it competitive with Jamestown as the runner-up school faired well in the sprint relays with first place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay. Roderick Spruel also picked up 10 points for Chancellor with another regional title in the 100 meter dash (10.94)   Other notable performances in the meet included a 6'9" clearance by Shawn Minor of Powhatan in the high jump, David Gunnerson of Grafton defeating Jamestown's Mearns in the 1600 meter run in a 4:23.46 win, DeAngelo Scales appearing to be a strong Group AA state tite contender in the 110 meter hurdles after a 14.69 clocking, and Denzel Cato of Chancellor reaching out to a mark of 45'4.50" in the triple jump.   Region I Championships Complete Results
