Part 1 of the varsity relay race at the 2009 Ragged Mountain Cup held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, VA on Tuesday, September 1st.
Western Albemarle made a clean sweep of the team titles at the Ragged Mountain Cup on Tuesday at Panorama Farms. The Western Albemarle girls were favored to win and it ended up being a no contest race between them and the rest of the girls' relays. The Western Albemarle boys may have took heavy losses due to graduation, but the tradition did not graduate as the Warriors certainly put their work in the summer, which gave them an earned advantage over the competition. After a big lead following their first two legs, Fork Union quickly lost their lead to Western and would have probably held onto the lead much longer if they could have ran two of their future running stars, sixth (Alex Lomong) and seventh (Peter Lomong) graders unable to run varsity for the team. Their last name might sound familar to track fans. Lomong. Yes, the younger brothers of US 1500 Olympian Lopez Lomong are now attending Fork Union Military Academy. In their very first high school race in the states, the Lomong brothers placed third and fifth respectively in the open two mile race, which followed the varsity 4x2 mile relay race. It is hard to believe, but the Albemarle boys were actually defeated in relay action last year. The national record breakers in the 4x800 indoor and outdoor as well as DMR national champions at Nike Indoor Champions proved to be beatable but in a cross country setting last September in the 2 mile leg-4 runners relay at the Ragged Mountain Cup at the hands of Western Albemarle with Foot Locker finalist Kyle Satterwhite and Nike All-American miler Tyler Stutzman. The landscape of Central Virginia high school running has changed drastically with the graduation of a great 2009 class of runners, so Tuesday evening's Ragged Mountain Cup should usher in new names and teams to carry the torch for this fall. MileStat.com will be on-site at the Cup with race videos, photos, and interviews! First race at Panorama Farms begins with the varsity (boys & girls) 4x2 mile relay at 5 PM.
