Athlete Spotlight: Clare Moretz

Madison County junior Clare Moretz is the defending Group A state champion in the 1600 meter run and returns this weekend to Radford University to not only go for a second straight title in the 1600 but also an 800 title as well as the top seed in that event. Moretz has been All-State in cross country all three years of high school including a runner-up finish this past November and will be looking forward to the cross country soon after the track season is over to prepare for a state title run in the fall. Despite doing very little training during the indoor season and competing in few big invitationals against top competition, Moretz has lowered her track times this spring to a recent 5:13 school and regional meet record 1600 meter performance as well as posting a 2:24 800 and 11:23 3200 meter performances during the 2010 outdoor season. Updated Group A state team rankings through the regional championships heading into this weekend's state championships at Radford University. The Appomattox County boys led by Kenny Scott and the James River girls led by Reanna Hamm are the top ranked teams heading into Saturday.
