Athlete Spotlight: Jaquan Dickson MileSplit Staff May 26, 2010

Jaquan Dickson (pictured left by John Herzog) is a story of second chances and redemption. As a sophomore at James Monroe, Dickson was a bright young track star who figured to be contending for Group AA state titles in the sprints for several years. That promising future took a screeching halt and was potentially over when Dickson was arrested on gun and marijuana possession charges then sent to a juvenile detention facility in Fredericksburg. Following a 6 month house arrest and lengthy re-instatement process back into the school system, a very changed and different young man for the better returned to the James Monroe track team as a senior this year. Not only has his new attitude and improved behavior been exemplary but his performances as well as he current owns Group AA's fastest times in the 100 and 200 meter dash while winning four district titles individually last week at the Battlefield District Outdoor T&F Championships. Whatever the outcome at the state meet in two weeks at Harrisonburg High School, Dickson's story already has been a success for the maturity growth and turnaround in his life with the help of the positive influences found through the people and sport of track & field.
