The daughter of a long-time successful high school cross country coach in Pennsylvania (Bill Bravin at Hollidaysburg Area HS), George Mason High School head coach Julie Bravin has to have made her coaching dad proud with the program that she has built on her own in over a decade at a small Group A school in the city of Falls Church. Under Coach Bravin in the past 12 years, George Mason has become one of Group A's top programs producing state champion individuals in Susanna Sullivan (cross country/outdoor track) and Natalie Young (outdoor track) along with several state meet top three finishing podium squads. The girls' team has qualified for the state meet every year in cross country during that entire time period. The 2010 George Mason girls' cross country team returned all seven runners from the 2009 Group A state cross country champion team and they have been showing no signs of letting down at all this fall in pursuit of a three peat (won first title in 2008) as their final race before the pinnacle race at Great Meadow was a dominant 7 finishers among the top 11 for another Region B crown. More impressive this fall is Bravin's coaching job with the George Mason boys who recently won their school's first regional cross country title on Wednesday at Panorama Farms against an Altavista squad which has finished among the top four in the last two state meets as well as maybe picked up the torch from the Clarke County dynasty with their numerous state titles in the last decade after the Mason boys snapped their streak of district championships last week. They will attempt to match or better the performance of their 2003 squad which finished as a shocking state runner-up following a fourth place regional finish. MileStat.com interviewed Coach Bravin following her team's school history making day and momentum building regional race into the state championships...
