Indoor team champions Atlee come into the outdoor state championships not as the undisputed favorite in the team competition as the Annnandale boys from the Northern Region and First Colonial from Eastern Region are both positioned well to compete for a state team crown. Isaiah Simmons in throws is one of several athletes or relays capable of challenging one of the state meet records.
The 2011 VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia on June 3rd and 4th will be one of the most competitive and exciting in meet history with some of the state's all-time greats competing, coupled with historic great depth in many events.

Western Branch girls still remain well out in front as the top ranked team in Group AAA and will be favorites to repeat as state champions this upcoming weekend at Sports Backers Stadium. Trailing Western Branch is two more Eastern Region squads in Phoebus and Grassfield, while teams capable of breaking up an Eastern Region top 3 trophy sweep include Cosby, Thomas Dale, Lake Braddock, Osbourn Park, and South County. Ahmed Bile and John Jenkins along with their 4x400 meter relay have the Annandale boys as the slight favorite over indoor state champions Atlee heading into next weekend, while First Colonial and Colonial Forge could be threats capable of scoring near 40 points.
