Pulaski County v. North Cross 2001

PULASKI COUNTY, VA -- Derek Surratt, a senior, of Pulaski County set the course record in 16:05 as he held off a furious late challenge by Freshman and fellow Cougar Lance McDaniel who finished second in 16:06.The Pulaski County team finished first in the dual meet with 26 points while North Cross finished with 29 points. North Cross was led by Jay Patel a 10th grader with a time of 17:20. A highlight of the meet was watching two 8th graders put on a show. Josh Crowder from Pulaski ran the course in 17:42 and Ben Althouse of North Cross ran the course in 17:55. However, Crowder had to run in the junior varsity division while Althouse could run in the varsity section due to following private school rules and not VHSL which allow 8th graders to compete in Varsity events.

The North Cross women were unchallenged as PCHS had only three runners to finish the race. Lindsey Taylor a Freshman of North Cross finished first for the ladies as she ran the course in 20:23. The Cougars claimed the next three spots as Candice Viers (12) Lauren Baker (12) and Christine Wampler (11) ran 21:07, 21:40, and 21:41 respectively.
