The MileSplit LIVE crew debates who the best boys teams are and who could challenge them this sesason
Virginia has definitely had some dynasties in cross country. We've had teams nearly sweep a decade's worth of XC team titles and we've had quite a few teams make NXN and be untouchable on the state level. Out of all those teams on the guys' side we've only ever had one team to put six guys under 16:00 in a single year and that was the 2012 Chantilly team.
While on a Workout Wednesday shoot in Virgina we caught up with the Loudoun Valley team.
Virginia has a long history of great runners and great families of runners. Out of all the families though there have been none that have swept the XC state titles in a single year. This year could change that with both the Northcutts and Morris' looking to win the 4A and 6A individual titles respectively.
The first big meet of the year definitely lived up to all the hype. It may have not featured every star in the state but it definitely showed us some new young stars, gave us insight into how good of shape some big names are in, and of course showcased Loudoun Valley's unparalleled depth.
Returning for his senior year is our preseason number one athlete, Peter Morris who will look to defend his 4A title and lead his stacked team to a third team title in a row. He enters the season with his 15:14 personal best, run at the state meet last year, and ranked 2nd amongst returners purely on time. He also returns having not lost to any returning athlete in XC in well over a year.
Rocking a 15:17 and 4:09 indoor Mile best, Sam Affolder enters the season as our highest ranked junior and our newest member to Team VA. Moving here from New York via a year in Pennsylvania is Affolder who will be the newest cog in the Loudoun Valley machine. Affolder also enters the season ranked #15 in MileSplit's national Flo50 rankings.
It is not often Virginia has a monster of a team. Now we do occasionally get some individual gems but it really hasn't happened in quite some time that we get a team of athletes who are not only contenders to make NXN but to win the whole ship.
Next up in our Flo50 boys countdown is No. 15 Sam Affolder
After multiple team title runner-ups and three state runner-ups, Loudoun Valley's Natalie Morris is certainly ready to take home that state title. This season she enters as our #9 returning star in the entire state and second amongst 4A competitors. She is though the fastest returning state course runner this year in 4A.
Below is just the start of our very competitive top fives. Check them all out over the coming weeks. Check out the #5 rankings right here!
Following those trends we are predicting a big season from Colton and expect his improvements over distances to keep improving. We know we are being bold here but sub 15 could very well be in his future.

Coverage and results from Wednesday's VHSL Group 3A East Regional XC Championships held at Culpeper County High School.
Loudoun Valley sophomore Andrew Hunter has quickly become the state's best underclassmen distance running talent this fall and a runner to keep on the radar for the next few years to see if he develops to become a elite competitor on the national stage. Hunter was the second highest finisher from the state of Virginia in a loaded Oatlands Invitational this past weekend cross the finish line ahead many of the state's best runners in a new 5K personal best time of 15:45, which is the 16th fastest time among all 10th graders in the United States this cross country season.
Loudoun Valley sophomore Audrey Houghton has to do a quick turnaround between her top two events of the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run with the 300 meter hurdles as her only break to separate her two races. The limited recovery time has not affected her this outdoor season though as she currently has the Northwest Region's fastest time and several invitational wins in the 400 meter dash, while most recently running a PR time of 2:18 in the 800 meter run doubling back from a 400 win at VMI. With the perfect mix of speed and endurance, Houghton (pictured right by John Herzog) seems destined to become a great 800 meter runner as the district champion and top 25 finisher this past cross country season might have the fastest open 400 PR out of any competitive runner from the fall season at 57.35. Houghton is the top seed in both the 400 and 800 on Friday at the Loudoun County Championships. Read more for interview with the Loudoun Valley sophomore...
The Cedar Run District looks much different this year with Osbourn Park having moved into the Cardinal District and Heritage High School in Leesburg moving up into the Group AAA district. With no Osbourn Park, it should make life easier for the Battlefield boys and Loudoun Valley girls to win district titles. Battlefield is expected to win the boys' team title by a large margin and will be one of several schools vying for a state meet berth next week in Charlottesville at the Northwest Region Championships. Both Darren Driscoll and Garrick Clemente (both pictured by Nicoll Knudsen) are younger brothers of former star runners at Battlefield High and also the district's top two individuals with Driscoll having ran the fastest time in the Cedar Run District at a 16:21 season best 5K. Loudoun Valley girls might get an honest challenge from Battlefield as the team's top two runners will face off for the individual district crown in Battlefield freshmen Nicole Carter and Loudoun Valley sophomore Audrey Houghton having almost identical season best times in the 19:20's.
