About Me

Native of Alexandria, VA. Competed (1978-82) and later coached the boys' and girls' XC, indoor and outdoor track teams (1987-95) at Bishop Ireton. Held 1000-meter run school record at Ireton. Boys team won two VA State Catholic championships (1988,1989). Also ran for the Virginians AAU team in the summer of 1979 and made it to the USA/TFA national finals in Dayton, OH for the 800 in the 12-13 age group. Completed three Marine Corps Marathons (1978-1980), the last in 3:45 at the age of 15. Ran cross-country, indoor and outdoor track for Wagner College (D-I, Northeast Conference) in Staten Island, NY (1982-86), and was part of a school record 4 x 1500 relay. At Wagner, trained with coach Bob Andrews, mid-distance record holder at U. Penn, and father of 2016 US Olympian (1500M) Robby Andrews. Boys track coach at J.E.B. Stuart (2002, 2003). Moved to Newport News in 2003 and worked for five years as boys’ XC and distance coach at Denbigh H.S. Patriots won six consecutive Peninsula District titles. Head indoor coach (2007-2008). Boys’ outdoor team placed 4th in AAA state meet (2007). Assistant track coach at Grafton H.S. (2008-2009). Girls’ cross-country coach, track ass’t at Menchville HS (2012-2014). Hired as head XC and asst. indoor/outdoor track coach at Deep Creek (2018-20), Region 4A outdoor champs,McLean (2021-22, Girls state runnerup. Currently am XC coach at Norfolk Collegiate to mark 22nd year of coaching. I have coached 27 former and current Division I athletes representing schools such as Virginia, VA Tech, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, William and Mary, VCU, Mount St. Mary’s, VMI, Norfolk State, Delaware St., Radford, Longwood, and others. Also coached at least a dozen runners who have competed at Division II and III at schools such as St. Augustine’s, Shaw, VA Union, Mary Washington, and VA State. By day, I am a special educator (Granby HS), and cover Class 4/5/6 state meets and the VA Showcase for Milestat. I also write for the Daily Press/Virginian Pilot, Virginia Preps, Washington Post & Alexandria Times.
