About Me

I am the conchman....been blowing the mollusc since I was in the 7th grade at Seabreeze Junior High. I am also sometimes known as the Bunnell Restaurant Patron. The resonant blasts from the conchshell in the stands of the old UF Field House helped rally the Sandcrab boys from 23 down at halftime to beat Pompano Beach at the buzzer in 1959. Senior guard and classmate, Willie Lager, scored 29 points in that state championship game. Willie, of course, is the longtime--and fabulously successful--girls coach at Spruce Creek High.
I'm a science professor at both DBCC & Embry-Riddle. I earned a bachelor's from Western Carolina and a master's from Clemson. I've been a doctoral student at Virginia Tech, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Northern Colorado.
I was head coach of both girls x/c and track at Spruce Creek High in the early 80's. Four of my five kids are runners, with my son Rice choosing soccer for his sport. My son Sam was a varsity runner on the state championship Alton, NH x/c team. Sam also ran track at Alton High. We moved to Florida in 1984, and Sam was a varsity runner on the Seabreeze High x/c team his senior year. Sam's coach at Seabreeze, Dick Edson, was another of my classmates at SHS. My son Ethan was a varsity runner in both x/c and track at Seabeeze High. He was x/c captain & mvp and track captain his senior year. Ethan ran the 800 in track at FIU, in Miami. My son Noah was a varsity runner in both x/c and track at Seabreeze High. He also was x/c captain & mvp and track captain his senior year. Noah is an FSU grad. He is currently teaching science at Father Lopez High. He is the assistant x/c coach, and he will begin his tenure as the head track coach for the Green Wave boys & girls in 2007. My daughter Tirzah ran x/c at both Atlantic High and Seabreeze High. Tirzah's coach at Atlantic, Thomas Vaughn, was a student in my honor's chemistry class at Spruce Creek High.
And so I am a parent, coach, teacher, and consummate fan. A mighty blast of the conchshell to you all!
