Girls Highlights

  • Western Branch's girls 4x800 showed they are not only back but arguably better than ever. They opened their season by running a US #1 9:43.02 and US #5 9:54 performance as they went 1-2 in the race. They split-up their 'A' team and did not even run senior anchor Amanda Thomas who split 2:07 last year.
  • Western Branch also had quite the showing in the 300 with two girls running 41.47 (Terrell) and 42.28 (Smalls).
  • Nansemond River aka Team War opened their season running a 1:45.35 in the 4x200 and expecting to break the state record this year.
  • Norfolk Academy's Julia Lambert won the 1600 in a solid time of 5:16 to open her season strong as she looks to win multiple VISAA state titles this season.

Boys Highlights

  • In one of the most exciting races of the weekend, Bayside and Phoebus battled it out in the 4x200. Bayside held on for the win in a VA #4 time of 1:33.92 just ahead of Phoebus running VA #5 1:34.25. Though these times are not killer fast, to be running these times this early in the season is a very good sign for them.
  • Jaelen Williams (Phoebus) led a strong 300m field and won with a time of 36.03. He would also go on to run on the Phoebus 4x400 team that ran a new state leading time of 3:29.80.
  • Malik Gurley (Prince George) ran a VA #2 6.49 in the 55m dash to take the title over Menchville's Torey Guilford (6.50).
