Girls' A Varsity Recap
We will have to go back and check the record books on this one but right it looks like this could have been the single fastest girls' race to be run in VA ever. A whopping 9 girls broke 18:00 with Rachel Northcutt at the helm. The only other meets to have equalled that number are the 2013 and 2014 Foot Locker South Regional races that have since been known to be short of a full 5K.
This race though was a full 5K and jam packed with talented runners.
Per her coaches advice, Rachel Northuctt held back for the first two miles of this race. That didn't stop her from running 5:32 for a mile with Lily Snow leading and a whole large pack basically tied thru the first third.
Even at the second mile it seemed anyone's race with a group of girls very much in contention. Northcutt, Palmer, and Wesolowski were the top three.
It wasn't until after this point that Northcutt starting making her move and pulling away. She never completely dropped the field but she showed us she is the real deal as she powered up the final rise and sprinted to the finish in 17:35 to now rank second all-time at this meet.
That time was over 20 seconds faster than her winning time last year and puts her on pace to run some really fast times over the next two years.
Quickly after she crossed the line it was a long stream of personal bests sprinting across the line as the clock counted up.
One of the biggest surprises was definitely Glen Allen's Caroline Robelen who dropped 70 seconds off of her pr in that race to finish 4th in 17:46.
It wasn't a surprise though on the team side as Blacksburg made quick work of their competition and walked away with a huge team win that saw two girls break 18:00.
