  • Freshmen of the Year Q&A: Julia Wood (Rappahannock County)

Out of a small Group A school, Julia Wood of Rappannock County has proven herself over in a little over a month to be a big distance running star in the making from the small town of Warsaw, Virginia. Wood may have only been the seventh fastest freshmen on the day at the state meet compared to the Group AAA and Group AA freshmen who raced later on in the day with much more competition around them, but showed last weekend at Foot Locker South how she matches up against the other top freshmen in the state when racing head-to-head. Competing in the freshmen race which featured many of the state's fastest freshmen, Wood saved her best of the season for her last with a 5K personal best time of 18:41 to win the race by five seconds.

  • All-MileStat.com XC Runner: Nathaniel Hall (Atlee)

An unfortunate illness the week of the state meet and then an early race fall at Foot Locker South prevented Nathaniel Hall of Atlee of having the close which he had hoped for after a consistently solid cross country season of race performances prior to his final two. The two-time Central Region champ Hall won three major invitationals during the season at Fork Union, Woodberry Forest, and Georgetown Prep while placing well in the top 10 at super competitive meets.

  • Group AAA XC Rankings & State Meet Preview

It is only fitting that in the last year of the existence of Group AAA as it currently exists before the six class system is implemented next year that arguably the most successful two girls’ cross country programs historically will be competing for the final Group AAA state cross country title (in the 3 class system). Lake Braddock was the team of the decade in the 1980s, while Midlothian was the team of the decade in the 2000s.

  • Group AA XC Rankings & State Meet Preview

A shocking upset was seen at last Thursday’s Region II Championships with Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph able to break away and defeat defending Group AA state champion and returning Foot Locker finalist Thomas Madden of Skyline. Joseph had beaten before, especially on the track with Joseph being the Group AA state champion at 1600 and 800 meters. However, anything above 1600 meters was Madden’s territory to own with personal bests of 14:59 for 5K and 8:59 for two miles.  Madden will undoubtedly be out for revenge against Joseph this weekend and should setup for a great individual battle.

  • Central Region XC Championships Coverage

Kara Dickerson apparently does not need too many races to shake off any rust. After last year missing much of the cross country season due to a stress fracture, Dickerson came back to help her Midlothian squad to state team title with a sixth place state meet finish. This year, Dickerson had the early stages of a stress fracture with a stress reaction to start the season and caused her to sit out of all races until the Manhattan Invitational in mid October. In only her second race of the season, Dickerson won the Central Region title in a 5K PR time of 18:06.

  • Northern Region XC Championships Coverage

An epic fast Northern Region Cross Country Championships was only fitting for the final Northern Region Cross Country Championships. The meet had individual race winners in Sean McGorty (14:18) of Chantilly and Sophie Chase (16:42) of Lake Braddock who threw down times which rank them among the second (McGorty) and third (Chase) fastest ever on the historic Burke Lake 2.98 mile course in Fairfax County.

  • Region III XC Championships Coverage

Over 11 years ago, it was a Saunders girl from Jefferson Forest leading her team to a regional title and onto another state championship. Today it is Erin Saunders, the kid sister of 2001 Group AA state cross country champion Shannon Saunders, who is out in front leading the Jefferson Forest girls on a quest to enjoy the same success from their great squads over a decade ago. The Jefferson Forest sophomore Erin Saunders won the Region III title on Thursday by 25 seconds in a time of 19:34 to lead her squad to a team title as well.
