AA State Meet Highlights MileSplit Staff Jun 4, 2006

Appomattox County boys broke a tie in the team standings with Caroline by winning the 4x400 meter relay (3:24.05) and AA state team title with 45 points. John Handley moved into second in the team standings with 40 points with a second place finish in the event. Appomattox\'s Rashad Kelso ruled the sprints with wins in the 400 (48.66) and 200 (21.45) meter dashes. The Griff Graves entry controversy was fixed as the sections of the 3200 meter run were combined due to impending severe weather and Zac Edwards of Northside was able to defeat Graves with a time of 9:23 for his first state title. Fort Defiance boys simply shattered the 4x800 meter relay state meet record with their 7:53.54. A fitting last race for the four Indians, who will all depart ways next year. Harrisonburg\'s Tim Beierle was not far off a meet record in the pole vault with a 14\'9\" clearance. Courtland girls rolled to victory by nearly a 25 point margin with Sha\'Tia Hart winning the long jump (18\'1.50\") and triple jump (37\'11.25\"). Courtland also had state champions in the 4x100 (48.85) and 4x400 (3:58.69) meter relays. Catherine White completed the distance state title trifecta in winning Friday night\'s 3200 meter run (10:49.52) and returning on Saturday to win the 1600 (5:05.81) and 800 (2:16.93) meter races. AA\'s other superstar in Natalie Baird of Park View proved her 157\'7\" at the Region II Meet in the discus was no fluke by setting a new state meet record of 152\'5\" in the event, while also winning a surprise state title in her weaker throws event in the shot put at 42\'8\". More to come from Harrisonburg.

If a state meet was scored by paper... MileSplit Staff Jun 1, 2006

Scoring of all three VHSL State Outdoor Track and Field Championships this upcoming weekend based off the performance lists. Scoring is eight places deep. There were a few mistakes in the performance lists that affect the list to some degree. Injuries and fatique will also play a role during the actual meet versus how the meet looks on paper going. Tiebreaker points were created for relays and individuals that shared the same time or mark (For example, two top seeds who have both cleared 6-8 in the high jump, each get 9.5 points versus 10 to first and 8 to second place in the regular meet setting).
