During his high school career at William Byrd, Trey Gibson was an All-Region performer numerous times in cross country and track. The Blue Ridge District runner-up in cross country this past fall, Gibson finished 33rd in the Group AA state meet before unfortunately missing most of his senior season of track. Going back to his junior year, Gibson had great success on the track running a string of PR's with best times of 1:58.85 in the 800, 4:28 in the 1600, and 10:06 in the 3200. The 2012 Blue Ridge district champion at 800 meters, Gibson is taking the Division III path for college as he will be making his way up Interstate 81 to Bridgewater College next.

Interview with William Byrd distance runner Trey Gibson

What was your most memorable race?
My most memorable race was anchoring our 4x4 team last year in indoor states and clipping a guy at the line for 8th place.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
The biggest competition for me and I think for everyone in Virginia is Blacksburg.

What was your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment throughout my career would probably be winning the 800m at the Cosmopolitan Invitational.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
I would be more motivated with cross country a lot earlier in my life. If I would have known that junior year was my last year to race I would have worked harder.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
The most difficult obstacle I had to overcome was coming to the realization that I was not going to be able to compete at all the rest of the year because of surgery I received earlier this year. I will not be able to run for another 2 months during rehabilitation.

What will you miss the most?
I already miss that feeling after a race when you are dog tired but you feel so good.(runner's high) I will also miss my coaches, teammates, and friends I made while running.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?
I would say "run smart" because you never know what will happen. Also, people get injured all the time but it's not what it does to you, its what you make of it.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
My coach has always said "The best way to predict the future is to make it." He has always pushed me to go to the next level whether it be athletics or academics. His accountability has created a demand for success in school and out.

What are your college plans?
I plan to run for Bridgewater College next fall.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
I would like to say thank you to God for helping me through this tough time. I would also like to thank my family and friends for the support.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
When people say you can't do not get discouraged and prove them wrong.
