Foot Locker Nationals Preview

SAN DIEGO, CA -- Virginia will have four representatives in Saturday\'s Foot Locker Nationals held at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. The lone female among the Virginians is Aurora Scott as the homeschooled junior from Chesapeake has a strong chance at becoming the first Foot Locker Nationals champion from the state of Virginia as well as the South region since 1986. Meanwhile, Abingdon junior Griff Graves and West Springfield senior Mike Spooner have All-American top 15 aspirations and higher in the 40 runner field for the boys. Mountain View sophomore Thomas Porter will be getting valuable early experience on Saturday at Balboa as only one of a few underclassmen who have qualified for the race among the four Foot Locker regions.

Based off her regional performance in Charlotte, Scott has to be the favorite. History is on her side for a victory at Balboa. After all, Scott broke a course record at McAlpine by 19 seconds that was held by the last Virginian and South region girl to claim the title in San Diego in Erin Keogh. Keogh was a two-time winner in 1985 and 1986 at Foot Locker (named Kinney Championships then). and her 16:43 win in 1985 stands as the second fastest time ever at Balboa behind Molly Fairchild\'s (CO) 16:39 course record in 1990. Scott is very determined to take care of business while in San Diego. \"I really want to represent Virginia very well out here,\" said Scott. The win will be no easy task with the likes of defending champion Jordan Hasay of California in the field among other talented individuals, but Scott would like to cap off a national championship with the record as well. \"I will be doing the same thing I did at Foot Locker South because I want to get the win and break the record also. I would really love to break the record,\" said Scott.

Scott has plans to compete in the USA Cross Country Championships in February, which will be held in Boulder, Colorado. If she is able to qualify for the US Nationals team, she would be making a trip to Kenya in March for the World Junior Championships. One advantage of being homeschooled, Scott can be selective about her races from her until then, which she enjoys that freedom or break from a heavy racing schedule. \"The greatest benefit is you do not have all these races. You can space them and pick and choose. You have the main goal in mind and can train for that,\" said Scott. Her main goal in mind on Saturday will be nothing less than a national championship and course record.
