High School Weekend Meet Report: Week 5

Salesianum Invitational Report

Saturday, October 4th, 2003

WILMINGTON, DE -- On Saturday Ouctober 4th the rain subsided for cross country runners from 63 schools, six states & DC, to be thoroughly tested by Brandywine Creek State Parks' hilly terrain. Those relentless hills greet the runners soon after takeoff. Then about midway through the 3.1 mile course, just after one substantial hill, runners face the daunting incline of "Maintenance Hill," with still more hills to attack before the finish line. West Springfield High School's Steve Tobin finished 1st in the varsity "A" race. Tobin's winning time is now among the top four runners and top five course finishing times that include the top winning time by another West Springfield HS runner, Sharif Karie in 1996, two winning times, 2nd & 3rd fastest, by Alan Webb of South Lakes HS, in 1998 & 1999, and the 4th best time by Ben Stern of Georgetown Day in 2000. Tobin's winning time was the 5th fastest ever recorded at Brandywine State Park. Bottom line...Virginians hold four of the top five finishing times for Delaware's Salesianum Invitational at Brandywine Creek State Park
