In the smallest classification of the VHSL could be the biggest race of them all. Last year, we saw the meet come down to just four points on the boys' side with Galax beating out Auburn. That was a year after Galax beat out Radford by a mere two points. This year however it looks that Auburn and Radford want to flip the script and win their own very close state meet. They are also joined by a very solid Alta Vista Combined School team that could be the favorite amongst them depending on who you ask.

The fact is simple though that this team race is going to be one of a kind and come down to the final runners. Auburn however will try their best to lead from the front as senior Trevor Dominy takes to the course in hopes of that elusive state title. He enters the weekend as a strong favorite at 15:46 ahead of Gavin Jenkins the 1A East Regional champion from Rappahannock County who has run 16:12 this season. Justin Adams of Mathews did not have the race he wanted last week at 1A East but has run a solid 16:14 this season and is ready for this weekend just as much as anyone else. If the weather turns bad then it could be anyone's race.

On the girls' side we get the third and final showdown between Rappahannock County's Julia Wood and Radford's Mary Elliott. Wood is the twice defending champion and the only girl in VHSL that has won a state title in the old three classification system. Elliott on the other hand has been runner-up twice in a row to Wood. This will be quite the showdown between these two girls as they attempt to both make history. Coming into the meet as the third and fourth seeded athletes are a pair of Auburn athletes Caitlin Dominy and Jessica Musselman.

In the team competition Radford is looking for a third consecutive title in a row and enter the weekend as the favorites to do so. They will have stiff competition from both Auburn and Mathews who want that title just as badly as Radford.

With all of these races and history on the line, the 1A classification may be pound for pound the most exciting and close classification of the championships.
