The Washington-Lee girls have the first day lead with 46 points while Edison and Mount Vernon are tied for first with 39 points apiece on the boys side after the first day of the National District championship meet held at Episcopal High on Tuesday, February 3.
The bulk of the W-L girls points were provided by senior Kimsue Grant as she was a triple winner by capturing the long jump at 15 feet, 7.25 inches; the high jump at 4-8; improved on her Northern Region leading mark in the triple jump with a victory at 35-9.5 and also finished third in the shot put at 28-1.75 to provide 36 of the 46 points for the Generals.
The other wins were by the Edison 4x800 relay team of Myah Hicks, Tara Tinsley, Toni Duvall and Betel Yosef in 10:04.72 and by Falls Church junior Riley Louden with a new district meet record in the pole vault at 8-3.
In the National District, the pole vault counts for advancement to the regional meet but not in the team scoring, since the three Arlington County schools in the district do not allow the event.
The Mount Vernon boys recorded wins from seniors John McMillon in the triple jump (43-10) and Shaq Thomas in the high jump (5-8) with Thomas also placing fourth in the triple jump (40-10) and sixth in the shot put (40-2.5).
Edison's sole victory was in the 4x800 relay with leadoff runner Ti Degfae building a large lead for the Eagles off his 1:58.7 split with Degfae followed by Aaron Anderson, Teddy Holmes and Dante Porneso to a total time of 8:41.34.
The other wins were by region leader Danny Laurence of Stuart in the shot put at 48-6 along with Falls seniors Reece Long in the pole vault (10-6) and fifth seeded Connor Simmons upsetting the field in the long jump (19-9).
The National District championship will conclude on Friday, February 6 at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Arlington, with the first running event to begin at 5:30 p.m.
