Wednesday's state championship was a perfect exemplification of why you run the 4x400m relay last in a meet. Heading into it Auburn and Patrick Henry were tied with 70 points each and leading the team competition by 12 points. That meant the team title would be decided with the 4x400m relay.
Due to them both being in the unseeded section they needed to finish at least first or second in it to secure a point if the final section outpaced them.
The gun went off and you could tell that Auburn and Patrick Henry were there to win it. They pushed the pace but were second and third halfway with Auburn leading the two. It wasn't until 150m to go in the third leg that Patrick Henry took over the lead and even passed James River for the outright lead in their section.
Then it was the anchor's turn. He carried it strong and made it clear immediately he wasn't just trying to win the section but the entire event. They had to wait quite some time to find out officially but they did end up taking home the title in that event. The final time was 4:37.38 to 4:37.44 with Poquoson second.
Patrick Henry ended up with 80 points and Auburn finished second with 72 points.
