Just a week after a not-so-perfect trip to Portland the boys of Loudoun Valley and their girls team too came to the LU Christmas Invitational with one goal in mind... qualify for states and get ready for a break.
Annually the Vikings choose one meet to fully load up their distance crew and chase the state standards while still in XC shape. That was the case this weekend at the Liberty Christmas Invite where both varsity squads and all their other runners raced for the standard so that they could focus on training from now until big invitational season and states.
This of course includes a nice couple week break for the runners to heal up and get ready for a long push from now until mid-June.
One athlete in particular had a monstrous meet and that was Carlos Shultz. He won both the 1600 and 3200 in US #1 times and posted quite impressive times regardless of the time of season. His 1600 was 4:18.15 and his 3200 was a scary fast 9:09.71.
Early season US #1's are always speculative since there is nothing to really compare to but that 9:09 is crazy fast. It is so fast that it ranks on VA's all-time list and would have ranked 21st in the nation last year at the end of the season.
