SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS: Three national titles produced by Virginians today with Fauquier junior Sarah Bowman in the 800 meter run and Lashawn Merritt in the 400 and 200 meter dashes. Bowman posted the nation\'s fastest 800 meter time in eight years with her smoking time of 2:04.94. Bowman controlled the pace of the race with leading splits of 42 at 300m, 59.60 at 400m, and 1:31 at 600m. The time places Bowman as #18 US all-time. Merritt, a strong favorite in the 400 meter dash, proved his sub 46 clocking earlier in the season was no fluke as he won with a national leading time of 45.36 (21.6 first 200). The time ranks Merritt #9 US all-time Merritt also doubled back just over an hour later to win a second national title in the 200 meter dash with a 20.80 clocking as he just missed the meet record of 20.77. Westfield boys DMR had an outstanding performance at AOC as they opened with the lead with a 3:02 1200 leg from David Groff. They stayed in and out of the lead for the next three legs until 1600m anchor leg James Scheiner was overtaken by Saline of Michigan\'s anchor, Dustin Voss on the backstretch of the final lap. Scheiner was able to hold onto a second place finish for Westfield at a solid 10:05.68 clocking.
FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS:Thomas Jefferson senior Christo Landry highlighted the performances by Virginia athletes on the first day of events at the adidas Outdoor Championships held at NC State\'s Paul Derr Track in Raleigh. Landry ran a scorching time of 8:48.25 in the boys\' two mile run to finish third with All-American honors in a closely contested race (Shadrack Kiptoo NM 8:45.44 and Josh McDougal NY 8:48.11). Both Landry and McDougal will be running at in-state universities as Landry is staying put in Virginia to run at the College of William & Mary, while McDougal is venturing south to compete collegiately at Liberty University. Albemarle senior Hari Mix finished a respectable eighth place in the two mile run as well with a time of 9:05.06. Bethel sophomore Francena McCorory also earned All-American honors in the 100 meter dash with a sixth place 12.01 clocking. Lake Braddock senior Ashle Haislip earned another All-American accolade in the high jump as she tied for sixth place at a 5-5 clearance. Amherst County senior Sheemeca Berkley finished not away from a national title of her own with a mark of 18-10.75 for a third place All-American finish in the long jump. Three Virginians had top eight finishes in the boys\' pole vault as Great Bridge teammates Michael Morrison and Daniel Magness as well as Norfolk Academy senior Will Byrd tied for eighth with others at a 14-11 clearance. Thomas Dale junior Dennis Boone competed in a exciting boys\' long jump which saw three athletes soar over the 24 foot mark as Boone finished third in the event with a leap of 24-2.25.
