Regional week begins on Tuesday with the Region II Championships being held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville and ends on Saturday with the Central Region Championships being held at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. on Wednesday, two regional meets were held with the Region III Championships and Region B Championships.
The Hidden Valley girls did it again and knocked off a top ranked Blacksburg squad at the Region IV Meet for the third consecutive year. Of course in the past two upsets, Blacksburg has been able to bounce back and win the Group AA state title the next week. We will see if history repeats itself next week at Great Meadow as two of the state's best teams face off once again. The Blacksburg boys repeated as team champions, while Kathleen Stevens of Blacksburg and Andy Eddletion of Christiansburg took first place honors individually.
Regionals were redemption meets for both the Lake Braddock girls and Grassfield boys as each school bounced back from district meet defeats to become regional champions and regain momentum heading into the state meet. The most dominant team performance of the week so far belongs to the Mountain View boys, who looked like the #1 team in the state with six runners in the top 15 and tallying a low team score of 28 points in a repeat as Northwest Region champions. The big stories at the Northern Region meet were the West Potomac runners showing their appreciation for retiring coach Don Beeby with state meet berths for both teams, while the Thomas Jefferson boys with their fifth place finish failed to make the state meet for the first time in over a decade. More to come from the regional meets...

Meet Preview: The Midlothian girls have won the last four Central Region cross country titles to coincide with their four straight Group AAA state titles. Do not expect the regional streak to discontinue this weekend for the Lady Trojans, but Lee-Davis freshmen Bonny Turnage might attempt to spoil an individual three-peat for Midlothian senior Kathleen Lautzenheiser. However, a highly anticipated individual match-up between Grant Pollock of Mills Godwin and Ted Richardson of James River might be the top story coming into the 2009 Central Region Cross Country Championships. Pollock is also attempting to not only become Godwin's first boys individual champion in regional meet history but also lead his squad to their first Central Region team title ever. Read more...

November 05, 2009 @ Bells Mill 5K Course in Chesapeake, VA

Despite losing their top three runners from a year ago, the Ocean Lakes girls repeated easily as champions by a 46 point margin. Landstown senior Stephanie Frenchik maintained her regional dominance with a personal best 18:22 win, while Drew Paisley made it a Beach District individual sweep as the Ocean Lakes senior scored a mild upset 15:37 victory. Northwest Region XC Championships
November 05, 2009 @ Panorama Farms 5K Course in Charlottesville, VA
Hosted by Albemarle
Meet Summary: The Northwest Region featured arguably the state's top three runners in Group AAA currently all in the same race in a preview for next week's state race with Katherine Walker of Brooke Point pulling out the big win as the underdog against defending indoor 3200 state champ Kaitlyn Davis (2nd, 18:14 of Mountain View and previous MileSplit US top 16 ranked Ariel Karabinus (3rd, 18:48) of Osbourn Park with an 18:12 victory. Albemarle's Anthony Kostelac, anchor leg on last year's national record breaking 4x800 meter at Nike Indoor and Penn Relays, continues to work himself back into top shape after an outdoor season ending stress fracture as he used his speed to kick to a 16:10 victory after a strong challenge from Riverbend sophomore Shaquon Wilkins who broke away twice from Kostelac in the race.
The Mountain View boys made a statement in the region team title by posting a dual meet like score of 28 points and placing 6 runners among the top 15. Mountain View will be the favorites to win the AAA state title next week and plan to compete for a national berth at Nike Cross Southeast. The Osbourn Park girls easily defended their regional title despite having several key runners coming off major illness as they prepare to challenge Midlothian for the Group AAA state title. The Commonwealth District exhibited its strength in advancing all four boys teams to state competition.

Region I XC Championships
November 05, 2009 @ Loriella Park 5K Course in Fredricksburg, VA
Hosted by Chancellor
Meet Summary: Colin Mearns running a 16 flat 5K at Loriella Park for the Region I Meet is pretty incredible run as only one runner has ever ran under 16 minutes on that challenging course which was his former teammate Andrew Colley who set the course record one year ago of 15:46. The Jamestown senior Mearns ran 16:16 in last year's race and went onto a top 10 finish NXN Southeast and solid 29th place finish at Nike Cross Nationals (2nd finisher from Southeast region). Mearns and the Jamestown Eagles enjoyed a great regional meet with boys and girls teams sweeping the team titles.
The girls win was unexpected as Lafayette was favored to win but had to sit out their #1 runner Heidi Peterson due to illness and the Lady Rams unfortunately finished in fifth place in her absence after a great season including a district championship last week. One member of the team will be racing next week though as Becky Dobosy did her part in stepping up with her teammate Peterson out as she at least kept the Region I individual crown in Lafayette's hands (Peterson won in 2008) with a dominant 22 second victory as she broke 20 minutes on a difficult 5K course in a time of 19:58.
Despite their #2 runner Graham Schlickenmeyer running a poor race while under the weather, the Jamestown boys were able to defeat rivals Grafton for a second week in a row and now will turn their attention to see if they can pull off the upset next week against Blacksburg and repeat as Group AA state champions.

Region II XC Championships
November 03, 2009 @ Panorama Farms 5K Course in Charlottesville, VA
Hosted by Western Albemarle
Meet Summary: The Brentsville girls came through in crunch time to overtake the favored Western Albemarle girls for the Region II team title behind the successful individual repeat by senior Allison Bartels who outran Loudoun County's Julie Strange for a five second 18:58 win. The order and list of boys team qualifiers could not have been predicted by any knowledgeable expert on the region as the Skyline boys qualified for their first state meet ever led by freshmen Thomas Madden and from the Jefferson District, it will be the Monticello boys and not Western Albemarle who will move onto state competition as team. Like the Brentsville girls, Potomac Falls boys are looking like a state meet podium squad in their repeat as Region II champions as a one second spread for their top three runners finishing among the top 15 sparked their charge. Thomas Curtin of Loudoun County continued his breakthrough junior cross country season in winning the individual regional crown with a 16:08 performance at Panorama Farms, which is 17 places better and over a minute faster than his sophomore year regional race.

Meet Preview: Loudoun County and Western Albemarle could enjoy championships twice on Tuesday at the Region II Championships in Charlottesville. Loudoun County have a serious individual contender in both races with Thomas Curtin (pictured left by Frank Locascio) and Julie Strange as both established themselves as favorites with strong season best performances last month on the regional course at the competitive Albemarle Invitational. Curtin has been a great story this fall from starting off as a virtual unknown to now be considered as a darkhorse to win the Group AA state title and at least set himself up in great position to become a state champion as a senior in 2010. The Western Albemarle boys and girls have the smallest time difference for their top five among the top contender teams, which could seal a sweep of regional team titles if both squads are able to close the door on their team scoring well ahead of the other challengers' fifth runners with their tight packs. Region IV XC Championships

Meet Summary: The Hidden Valley girls did it again and knocked off a top ranked Blacksburg squad at the Region IV Meet for the third consecutive year. Of course in the past two upsets, Blacksburg has been able to bounce back and win the Group AA state title the next week. We will see if history repeats itself next week at Great Meadow as two of the state's best teams face off once again.
The Stevens did their part at least up front for Virginia's top ranked team. In her first race ever on the course, Kathleen Stevens scorched a time of 17:04 on the 3 mile Sugar Hollow Park course in Bristol, which is a faster performance than 2008 Foot Locker South runner-up Megan Marsico posted on the same course last fall. Twin sister Joanna Stevens finished 25 seconds back in second place at 17:25.
Without a top runner to challenge the Stevens twins, the Hidden Valley girls instead took it to the Blacksburg girls in the remaining scoring positions with a spread from 18:12 to 19:09 for their top five scorers all placing among the top 10 individual. Blacksburg's fourth and fifth runners placed 14th and 17th respectively to put them behind Hidden Valley in the team scoring.
The Blacksburg boys won easily with a team score of 25 points with a 32 second spread for their top five (15:47-16:19) as their team's pecking order continues to rotate each week as Frank Locascio was the team's top finisher, while George Carter was the team's fifth finisher. Christiansburg's Andy Eddleton followed up his district victory last week against the Blacksburg with a regional title in a time of 15:36.
Teams also advancing onto the state meet from Region IV were Cave Spring (2nd), Christiansburg (3rd), and Abingdon (4th) for the boys then Cave Spring (3rd) and Christiansburg (4th) for girls.
