Seagull Opener: Low and Wyss lead CNU

SALISBURY, MD -- Christopher Newport University opened up their season in impressive style placing as the top Division III school in both the men\'s and women\'s competition at the Seagull Opener. Junior Emily Low ran an outstanding race running a 22:58 (an early season P.R. for Low) for the 6K course placing fourth overall. Also in the top ten for CNU was freshmen Bridget Dryer running a quick 23:40 for the first time at the distance for her. Junior Megan Fogarty (17th, 24:10), sophomore Crystal Pruitt (18th, 24:18), and sophomore Ashley Ezell (22nd, 24:25) rounded out the CNU women\'s top five scoring places. CNU\'s women placed 2nd as a team.

As has become a yearly tradition, CNU\'s men went straight to the back at the start of the race running a pedestrian 5:40-5:50 for the first two miles before they let loose and starting picking off runners ending up in third as a team. Freshmen Jay Wyss overtook teammate Cary Chaffee in the last 100 meters to place 7th overall in a time of 27:07. Chaffee was a mere 3 seconds behind. Along with Wyss and Chaffee, CNU placed their entire top seven runners under 28:00 as sophomore Tim Scott (19th, 27:25), sophomore David Barham (21st, 27:30), freshmen Daniel Swale (22nd, 27:31), senior Nate Wallace (26th, 27:51), and sophomore Brandon Miles (28th, 27:53) formed a strong seven with Wyss and Chaffee.
