Lake Fairfax Cross Country Invitational Preview

FAIRFAX, VA -- Oakton High School (Vienna, VA) will host the 6th Annual Lake Fairfax Invitational on Saturday, September 18, 2004 in Reston, VA. Heavy rain is predicted for the event which was cancelled last year due to a Hurricane Isabel. The course has been redesigned and offers many challenges including two creek crossings and multiple hills. 38 schools and over 1500 athletes are expected to participate in the invitational which begins at 9:00 a.m. with 9th grade races. The meet concludes with the seeded varsity races beginning at 12:00 p.m. The seeded boys race includes Oakton (#1 ranked team in Virginia), Walter Johnson (#7 in Maryland), Ireton (#2 private in Virginia), strong Robinson and Herndon teams, Sherwood from Maryland, and WCAC powers Gonzaga and Good Counsel. Some of the top individuals in the race are Danny Gordon and Ermin Mujezinovic of Herndon, Alex Bowman of Hermitage, Brian Fussell of Hayfield, and James Phillips of Oakton.

Many of the top ranked teams in Virginia will line up in the girls seeded race at 12:30 pm. Oakton is ranked #2 in Virginia AAA, Robinson is ranked #5, Westfield is ranked 8th among Virginia girls teams, Hayfield is #9 in Virginia and Cave Spring is the 5th ranked AA team in Virginia. Herndon, the defending Virginia AAA State Champions will also compete. In addition, perennial Maryland girl team powers Good Counsel and Walter Johnson are among those teams which will compete in the Seeded races. Many of the top individuals will be competing including Melissa Dewey of Hayfield, Laurel Sitze of Cave Spring, Catherine Lynn and Alexis Deegan of Westfield, and Danielle Light of Oakton.
