Six State Meet Podiums Decided By Under 5 Points

It's state championship week and that means you can throw out the times and just look at places and scores. Out of the twelve races Saturday, six of them featured podium finishes that came down to five points or less. Here they are in order of how close the finish was. 

State Meet Results 

5 Points

The Class 1 girls' team title battle came down to five points and a tie-break! Auburn won the team title with a score of 89 points edging out Mathews and George Wythe who both scored 94 points each. Mathews took the tie-break with their sixth place runner finishing in 46th place to George Wythe's 59th place. 

3 Points 

In the Class 6 boys' race it was Woodbridge defending their title with a tight battle for second. Centreville would eventually pull away with the trophy finishing with 95 points to Gainesville's 98 points. 

2 Points 

The Class 2 boys' team title was handedly won by Clarke County (49) but for that second spot on the podium it was a close one. Ultimately it was Floyd County finishing in second with 82 points just ahead of Wise Central's 84 points. Floyd County also went 1-2 in the race with Mason Erchull defending his title. 

Also being decided by two points was the Class 5 girls' competition with Ocean Lakes defending their title (62) over Riverbend (64) in a very tight competition. 

1 Point 

Just a single point decided the Class 2 Girls' Team Championship with Floyd County fending off Clarke County 44-45. Looking at the results it shows you how this is truly a team sport and how just three seconds here or there would decide the team title for them. 

0 Points - Tie-Breaker 

Finally that brings us to the big one. The first race of the day and the race we were most looking forward to. It was the Class 6 Girls' Race that did not disappoint. Ultimately it ended in a tie-breaker between West Springfield and James W. Robinson both at 57 points. Both teams finished with four runners finishing with all-state honors too! It ultimately came down to the sixth runners though which gave the advantage to Robinson (36) over West Springfield (42). Both teams also averaged 19:04.
