RESTON, VA -- Richard Smith of South Lakes, Robinson\'s Steve Huntzinger, Fatima Shuler of Wakefield and Oakton\'s Bonnie Meekins were the recipients of the outstanding performer awards to highlight the Third Annual Seahawk Invitational held at South Lakes High School this past Saturday.

Over 1,200 athletes representing more than 30 schools participated in the day long meet, which was held in rather brisk conditions with just enough wind to make the temperature feel far less than hovering around the 40 degree mark for most of the contest.

Smith of South Lakes, whose times ranked him among the top three in the country during the indoor season in the 500 meter dash and also 800 meter and 1,000 meter runs, anchored the Seahawks distance medley relay team which included Jonathan Gohrband (1,200 meter leadoff leg), Justin Smyser (400) and Matt Greenspan (800) to victory in 10 minutes, 29.83 seconds with his 1,600 relay split of 4:19.

Smith, who started his anchor leg ten seconds ahead of World Junior cross country finalist Bobby Lockhart of Handley, matched Lockhart\'s quick early pace of 59 seconds for the first 400 and 2:02 at the 800 meter mark and was never challenged with Lockhart also putting up an excellent time of 4:18 in the late morning race.

Smith then came back about six hours later to post a convincing win and break his own meet record in the 800 run with his winning time of 1:55.22. The South Lakes senior posted very even splits as he went through the first 400 in 57.5 and hit the 600 mark at 1:29 enroute to a 30 meter victory.
