Hahn Wins the Shot Put at the Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. - Virginia Tech\'s Sven Hahn won the shot put competition today at the Clemson Invitational, which was held at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility.

Virginia Tech\'s No. 23 men\'s team didn\'t disappoint this weekend as two NCAA qualifiers battled it out for the shot put title. Hahn overtook teammate Ryan Norwood for first place to capture the win. Hahn had his second NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 60\'3.25\" (18.37m), which broke Norwood\'s school record. Norwood finished second with a mark of 58\'8.75\" (17.90m).

Two-time BIG EAST pole vault champion Brian Mondschein (Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.) placed third in the pole vault with a season best jump of 16\'6.75\" (5.05m).

Jason Fludd (Sr., Stafford, Va.) took third in the triple jump finals (48\'2\"; 14.68m).

David Clowney (So., Delray Beach, Fla.) was the top Tech finisher in the 200 meters. Clowney clocked 22.67 for eighth place. He ran in his first race of the indoor season on Friday. He recorded a 60 meter time of 6.98 and finished 12th in the preliminaries.

On the women\'s side, Tamara Burns (Jr., Elm Creek, Neb.) finished fourth in the women\'s weight throw competition with a mark of 65\'6\" (19.96m). With her throw, Burns broke teammate Kristen Callan\'s school record of 60\'10.75\" (18.56m) and provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships, which will be held on Mar. 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark. Callan (So., Monroe, N.Y.) had a throw of 60\'1.75\" (18.33m) for seventh place in the event.

Erin Mahony (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) tied for ninth in the pole vault event.

Virginia Tech\'s women\'s 4x400-meter relay team of Shamane Onwudiachi, Victoria Green, Giles and Spruill placed eighth in 4:01.25.

Britni Spruill (Fr., Hampton, Va.) had a 200 meter time of 26.22 for 16th place.

In the women\'s long jump, Spruill jumped 17\'0.75\" (5.20m) for 16th place.

The Hokies will next compete at the North Carolina Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 5 in Chapel Hill. Tech\'s distance runners are taking the next couple of weeks to train and will compete at the next home indoor meet, the Virginia Tech Challenge, on Feb. 11-12.
