Hannah Lowery kept running after her 18:28 district cross country title to help field hockey team to regional championship game (but made it back in time for awards ceremony). She'll have to pull double time again next Thursday with the regional championships for cross country and field hockey on the same day separated by an hour span.

District Power Shift in Northern Region?

The joint district championships which are held back to back days at Burke Lake Park over the years with the first day including the Concorde and Liberty District Championship races, has always had clearly one district more superior to the other in the past with the Concorde being the more anticipated and competitive district to watch. However, 2010 has been a unique year as the Liberty District turned out yesterday to be the district with potentially next week's Northern Regional team champions in the Thomas Jefferson girls and South Lakes boys. The South Lakes boys won their first district title since 1984 and are seeking their first state meet appearance next week in a decade, while the Thomas Jefferson girls were able to use their depth to overcome a front running powered Langley squad for a 35 to 41 point victory. Thursday's Commonwealth District Championships will be a cruel cross country version of musical chairs with only four spots available for five boys' teams which have been ranked among the top 10 in the state this season. One team between VA #3 Colonial Forge, VA #4 Stafford, VA #5 Albemarle, VA #8 Mountain View, or VA #11 Riverbend will be sitting home next week for the Northwest Region despite that fifth place finishing team capable of placing top three for a state meet podium showing with a good day next month at Great Meadow. The margin of error will be small, but the pressure will be huge for all five teams. Riverbend does not want to be fifth for a second straight year, while the Mountain View boys do not want to go from AAA state champions to failing to make it out of their district. Albemarle is ranked fifth on paper comparing season best 5K times alone, despite being ranked sixth in Group AAA using the same formula to rank teams. Colonial Forge and Stafford appear to be in more secure positions and have greater levels of confidence in advancing onto the regional meet, but crazier things have happened in championship season.
