VIC in second place after day one at NAIA Nationals

LOUISVILLE, KY - Virginia Intermont College finds itself in second place with 16 points after the first day of competition at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships held at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Kentucky. VIC distance star Fernando Cabada was crowned a national champion with his win in the 10,000 meter run as he was clocked in at a time of 29:53.09 as the junior took a narrow victory over Simo Kiplagat (29:54.06) of Lindenwood.

Fellow VIC junior Corey Duquette finished third in the event under 30 minutes as well at 29:56.85. Three other freshmen Cobras competed in the event also with Steve Gabart (13th, 31:52.95), Jesus Chavez (17th, 32:24.87), and Ondrej Puskar (22nd, 32:59.06).

Virginia Intermont College sophomore David Cheromei could possibly pick up another ten points for the Cobras in the steeplechase finals as he had the fastest time in the preliminaries on Thursday by 17 seconds with a time of 8:53.56. VIC sophomore Pat Marion also qualified for the finals in the event as he finished second in his heat with a time of 9:17.49.
