Day 1 Meet Summary

With a rare opportunity to face comparable competition to her in the 55 meter hurdles, Episcopal senior Shantell Bingham showed a quick flash of what she is capable of doing when pressed by clocking a US #3 time of 8.05 in the finals at the St. Christopher's Invitational in Richmond on Friday. Facing off against some of the Eastern Region's top hurdlers (except for returning Group AAA indoor state runner-up Desmonae Gray), Bingham rolled through her lane of hurdles in a significant PR by 16 hundredths of a second and putting her suddenly closer to elite company of a sub 8 second performance.

The host school St. Christopher's and sister school St. Catherine's put on a great show for their home crowd supporters in the 4x800 meter relays with the St. Christopher's boys reclaiming the top time in the state of Virginia and moving to US #7 in the relay event with a 8:01.30 performance by their quartet. The St. Catherine's girls may have set a new school record (unconfirmed) as it is tough to recall a 4x800 meter relay from their school running as fast as their dominant 12 second victory at 9:43. Ben Constable for St. Christopher's and Taylor Clevinger for St. Catherine's have both put together fantastic senior indoor seasons so far and hold a lot of credit for their relays' success.

The Highland Springs boys' program appears to be on the rise under the guidance of coach Matt Gifford as shown on Friday with two event winners. Highland Springs senior Teshad Chambers outdueled his Capital District nemesis Trevor Elie of Atlee in the finals of the 55 meter dash with a 6.48 clocking, while another Springer achieved a big personal best performance in a first place showing with Matthew Ross tying several others nationally at US #7 in the long with his mark of 23'0.75". Ross becomes the new state leader in the event.

Western Branch girls are missed at Virginia Tech as their speed certainly would have been accelerated on the fasted banked 200 meter track in Blacksburg, but they will not be slowed down on St. Christopher's exceptional 200 flat track either this weekend. On Friday, Western Branch had a pair of girls take the top two places individually in the 55 meter dash finals with Shakia Williams (7.23) and Desmonae Gray (7.25) pulling away from defending Central Region champion Shyra Molton (3rd, 7.27) of Patrick Henry. While Molton is one of the Central Region and Richmond area's fastest in the short sprints, Williams and Gray are currently only rank fourth and fifth fastest on their own team this season in the 55 meter dash behind Keilah Tyson (6.87), Taranisha Taylor (7.04), and Tiffany Ellick (7.15).

Ellick did not compete in the 55 meter dash at St. Christopher's on Friday, but instead was found sprinting down the long jump runway on the outside perimeter of the backstretch. She moved herself into the US top 10 list in the girls' long jump with a season best mark of 18'5.50" which puts her #9 in the nation and at the same time places her third on the Western Branch squad in the event behind US #1 Keilah Tyson (20'1") and US #5 Desmonae Gray (18'10.50").

Sophomores ruled the 3200 meter run with 10th graders picking up first place finishes for both boys and girls. Douglas Freeman's Ronnie Calkins, an All-State cross country performer in the fall, dipped under 9:40 for the first time with an automatic state qualifier time of 9:39.08. Meanwhile, Maggie Walker's Rachel Galton rallied late in the race to take over first from the Hanover pair of Molly Breidenbaugh and Anna Gordon for a 11:12.09 personal best victory.
