Mikels Named Big South Runner of the Week

Sophomore Finished in Top 50 in Prestigious Paul Short Invitational


CHARLOTTE, N.C. – VMI's Donnie Mikels has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the League announced today.


Mikels, a sophomore from Rustburg, Va., led the Keydets to a 21st place finish out of 44 teams at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh. Individually, he finished 41st overall with a time of 24:45 in the 8,000-meter race.


This marks the third consecutive race this season that Mikels has been the top Keydet finisher. At the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State, Mikels ran a 26:34, good enough for 11th place overall, while at the VMI Invitational, he turned in a third place finish with a time of 25:53 while helping the Keydets to the team title, defeating Liberty, Radford and UNC Asheville.


The Keydets will continue their strong season on Saturday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to compete in the Winthrop Invitational.
