Madden wins Southerrn Track 2 mile at UVA with sub 9 clocking, Nelson takes girls race in 10:39

Skyline junior Thomas Madden continued his torrid pace in his races so far this outdoor season in winning a loaded Southern Track Classic high school 2 mile field assembled at the University of Virginia on Saturday night. The recent Penn Relays 3K champ Madden clocked his first sub 9 minute performance of 8:59.62 at the full 2 miles distance to edge out UVA recruit Michael Marsella (9:00.90) from Chario High School in Rhode Island and broke away from the rest of the Virginians including local favorite Adam Visokay (3rd, 9:05.07) from Albemarle. A total of 9 runners went 9:17 or faster in the boys' race.

It was a Group AA sweep as far as the race champions with Millbrook senior Crystal Nelson running a lifetime best time of 10:39.97 to lead five others under 11 minutes in a smaller girls' field. Nelson had tuned up for the big 2 mile in Charlottesville with two personal bests at 1600 (4:55) and 800 (2:18) meters two weeks ago at the Apple Blossom Invite. Two sophomores trailed Nelson in between West Springfield's Caroline Alcorta (2nd, 10:41.34) and Ocean Lakes' Nicole Park (3rd, 10:45.25). Wilson Memorial junior Hannah Rose ran one of the fastest times ever by a Group A runner with her fifth place finish of 10:54.43.
