With big meets come big competition and for this week's Adidas XC Challenge down in Cary, North Carolina that is going to mean a lot of the top kids in Virginia are going to be meeting some new competition. Headlining this competition are the Bruins of Blacksburg High School.
So you guys have some good teams down in North Carolina as we all found out when Broughton and Cardinal Gibbons ran at Knights Crossing and maybe you also have some decent basketball schools but we have some stuff in Virginia too. This year at the Adidas XC Challenge you guys are going to get to meet some of the biggest and baddest teams in Virginia this weekend. The best of which are the girls from Blacksburg. If that name seems familiar you are not mistaken. This team, historically has been an amazing track program producing relay teams that are national champions and Penn Relays champions too. This current squad though is going to be one to remember. They are built to shatter the 4xMile national record this year but they also have some endurance too. In MileSplit's latest national rankings they were ranked 3rd in the nation. They average 18:26 and have five sub-18:50 girls.
Here is their lineup:
Bonnie Angermeier 18:00.00
Jennifer Fleming 18:21
Annie Kay Combs 18:28
Emily Beaty 18:38
Samantha Marin 18:45
Also they have an injured girl who ran 19:09 last year as a sophomore, Olivia Hodge who no doubt will also be in contention later this season.
As you can no doubt see, Va has some good teams but we also have some top-notch individuals ready to race this weekend too. Some of the top individuals coming include Libby Davidson and Peter Seufer both from E.C. Glass in Lynchburg, Virginia. Peter boasts a season best of 15:41, Va #2, and Libby Davidson comes into this meet with an amazing 17:36 which is currently 13th in the nation. Both of these runners are used to hills and showed us what type of speed they have when they threw down those times at Knights Crossing last weekend. Peter however was the only one of these two to lose to a North Carolina runner when he was the runner-up to Jeremy Brown of Broughton. If Broughton is there this weekend then expect a solid rematch with these runners.
Also in attendance will be the teams from Patriot and Ocean Lakes high school in Virginia. Both of these schools have very talented girls teams who entered the season as favorites to win a trophy at states. These teams however have laid low early this season and seem to be setting up a big coming out party down in North Carolina this weekend. Though this list is not all-inclusive, it does show you that Virginia will be bringing the heat this weekend and will be ready to race.
