The high jump is one of the most technical and specialized events in T&F. Most good athletes can get by in the event but it takes true specialization to hit those super high marks. For us that is defined at 5'9" for the girls and 7'0" for the boys.
Here we tried to look at both national and Virginia high jumpers and see if we are at an all-time high with our jumpers or if the bar is getting lowered.
Graph of VA and US Jumpers
When we sought out to find this information it was under the hypothesis that we would have less elite jumpers due to the rise in year round basketball and football which definitely takes athletes away from T&F. The data though speaks differently to that assumption.
According to the data there is no real trend that you can say is significant here. There are highs and lows and only if you dug really deep with lower heights would you maybe find another answer to this.
