MileStat.com stayed local on Monday morning before a week of traveling around the state again to visit the Maggie Walker program and one of the state's most respected and accomplished high school coaches in Jim Holdren. The team did their second hill workout of the season on a 200 meter hill repeat with a 400 meter jog or walk recovery at Byrd Park in Richmond. The varsity level runners for both boys and girls did as many as 10 repeats total in the workout. The Maggie Walker girls are attempting to rebuild quickly after graduating five of their top seven. Despite the losses, the tradition and continued full attention and development by Coach Holdren with his younger and developmental runners each year seems to always have the program always ready to reload for another state meet bound squad. The team is led by senior Anna Spiers, who was All-State indoors at 1000 meters and ran personal bests of 2:15 in the 800 and 5:06 in the 1600 meters this past spring. The rising star for the Maggie Walker girls is sophomore Rachel Galton who really came on in the outdoor season as a freshmen running a 11:28 3200 then finishing her season with a 18:53 5K performance on the track at the MileStat.com Gala. Behind Spiers and Galton is a group of five girls who have 5K personal bests in the 20 minute range who look to close the gap on their front two in order to make their team more competitive this fall. The Masters of Overachieving is a good way to describe the Maggie Walker boys program, who despite often being dwarfed by their successful girls program and each year more concerned about getting out the district with a top four finish, seem to have taken the rest of the region and maybe themselves off guard when they have snuck into the top 4 at the regional meet and moved onto the state meet. The past two years, the Maggie Walker boys have finished the same place in the region as they did in the district meet which last year they went from third in the Colonial District to a solid 7th place finish in the AAA state race. This year's team will not be fooling anyone that they can turn it on when it matters come championship season time as there is hope among the squad that they can snap the seven year drought from the Maggie Walker boys' last district team title in 2002. MileStat.com was on-site for a portion of the 2010 East Coast Invitational held Saturday, January 2nd at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. When the bid was given to Reno, Nevada to host the 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, a snowtorm was certainly not the expected race day weather conditions. Snow flakes in the air and a white powder covering the course is exactly what a contingent of Maggie Walker runners led by their All-State runner Clarissa Schick experienced during their races this past weekend. Schick earned All-American honors once again in a USATF championship meet after achieving the distinction last December when the meet was held at Pole Green Park. Schick (pictured by Margie Swart) placed third in the young women's division 5K with a time of 19:23. Also earning All-American honors from Maggie Walker were Marc Breidenbaugh in the intermediate boys division (19th, 16:51) and Caroline Newcomb in the young women division (19th, 20:20). Neither Paige Kvartunas of West Springfield nor Kevin Dowd of Fairfax would have been satisified with the finish to their seasons if they decided to shut it down following the state meet. After winning the Northern Region title over some of the state's top runners, Paige Kvartunas (pictured by John Olson of scrunners.com) failed to make even the top 15 and earn All-State in Group AAA girls state race. Meanwhile, Dowd had been the #1 ranked runner in the state during the middle of the season but had to settle for third place finishes at both the regional and state meet to runners who simply had stronger finishes. Those disappointing showings are distance memories for both Northern Region runners after qualifying for the Foot Locker Nationals on Saturday with ninth place finishes each in the seeded race at the South regional.

Clarissa Schick (pictured by John Olson of scrunners.com) and several of her Maggie Walker teammates will be extending their cross country season to the USATF Junior Olympic Nationals in Reno, Neva after qualifying through the regional meet on Saturday in South Carolina. Schick, an All-State finisher in the Group AAA race (10th place) last weekend, won the young women's division race with a personal best 18:21 performance to finish 43 seconds ahead of her nearest competition. Schick previously had a personal best of 18:35 for 5K and will be looking to follow in the footsteps of former teammate Susannah Piersol, who was a national runner-up in the USATF national race a few years ago.

The Newport News Invitational saw a very early season showdown of the two runners who likely will be battling for the Eastern Region title later this season in Kellam's Bobby Peavey and Western Branch's Blake Theroux. The only definite heading into the race would be that fast times would be posted in a duel between the two as the #10 ranked (Peavey) and #11 ranked (Theroux) in the state of Virginia would meet on one of the fastest 5K courses in the state found at Newport News Park. The senior Peavey defeated the junior Theroux in their first head-to-head race of the season with a state leading 5K time of 15:32 to break the old course record of the newer version of the Newport News Park course.
