Two of Double A's best distance runners in Crystal Nelson of Millbrook and Katie Fortner of Cave Spring matched up twice on Saturday at the Knights Track Classic in Roanoke. Nelson made the three hour trek down I-81 to race Fortner on her home track. In a race between two state champions from indoors (Fortner - 1000 champ & Nelson - 3200 champ), the score was even at the end of the day with Fortner as the 5:04 winner in the 1600 and Nelson as the 10:58 winner in the 3200. The 2011 All-MileStat.com Cross Country Team has been published. Selections include Runner of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshmen of the Year, Most Improved Runner of the Year, and 7 runners selected each for the first, second, and third All-MileStat.com teams. Greatest weight given to championship season (district, regional, and state) as well as post-season (Foot Locker/NXN) performances in the selection process, but consistently strong performers during the invitational season was taken into consideration as well if a subpar race or two down the final stretch. Congratulations to all members of this year's All-MileStat.com Team!

  A brief look at some of the top invitational meets on October 1st with Virginia runners. Great American leads the way with Octoberfest and Glory Days close behind as the featured meets.

The Colonial Forge girls were expected to win big at the Chancellor Invitational when sizing up the field heading into the meet, but the Colonial Forge boys who lost several key members from loaded 2010 squad due to graduation were a bit of a surprise in repeating as Chancellor Invite champs over their district rivals from Stafford. 

Ahmed Bile of Annandale and Jeremy Greenwald of Grassfield (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) battled it out for the AAA state 1000 meter title two weeks ago with Bile winning in a thrilling race with both runners timed at 2:28. They will not be facing each other head to head at the indoor nationals, but in separate races will look to prove themselves as the best distance runners of the indoor season from Virginia with Bile in the fast section of the 800 and Greenwald in the fast section of the mile at the Armory.   A list of all Virginian boys (links to athlete profiles) entered currently in this upcoming weekend's New Balance Indoor Nationals at the New York Armory. New cream of the crop rankings following state championship weekend with the top 15 teams and top 25 individuals for all classifications combined.

All photos by Michael Somers   The cold rain was an inconvenience to some runners on Thursday racing at their regional meets, but it was a blessing for Stafford sophomore Hannah Lowery as the rain postponed her field hockey game to leave her concentration solely on the sport which does not cancel due to a little rain. She has had to pull double time all fall long between the two sports as her Stafford field hockey team is state tournament bound, while Lowery herself individually is considered to be one of the top contenders for the Group AAA state cross country title. She has done better than pretty well juggling and perfoming well in both sports. As a less busy and time strapped two-sport athlete at the Northwest Region Championships in Charlottesville, Hannah Lowery broke the meet record time by seven seconds with her 18:05 performance and just missed the course record of 18:02 set by Ariel Karabinus in last year's Albemarle Invitational.   Patrick Henry senior Patrick Woodford gets little respect but still finds a way to win Northwest Regional titles. Last February, Woodford won the indoor regional 3200 title and it was a surprise. Last May, Woodford defeated several runners with faster personal and season bests for the outdoor regional 3200 title. Despite being a two-time regional champion on the track and winning several invitationals, Woodford was not considered an odds on favorite to win the cross country regional crown on Thursday as well. Woodford made a break for the win at the major hill found at the two mile mark on the Panorama Farms 5K course and never looked back. At the end when he crossed the line with a personal best time of 16:02, he finally looked back in the chute to see his teammate Harnel Paultre kicking past others for second place in 16:08.   The Commonwealth District was essentially the state qualifier meet for the Northwest Region boys' teams with four of the state's top 10 ranked programs advancing on. The regional race itself ended up becoming a re-run of those four teams with the chance that the order might get re-arranged. The order changed for all four Commonwealth District teams from districts to regions, while still maintaining their position in the top four to advance to the state championships. The VA #3 Colonial Forge boys came in as the favorites and had escaped an upset barely at the district meet at the hands of the VA #4 Stafford squad. Despite posting a team average two seconds faster than last year's AAA state champions from Mountain View (16:38) posted in their 2009 region win, Colonial Forge (16:36 average) would not be able to hold Stafford off for a second straight week.  Coach Pete Augrom's squad at Stafford averaged 16:26 at Panorama Farms with only a 35 second spread for a top five which nearly all placed among the top 15 for All-Region. Stafford's Tyler Oliver (4th, 16:11), Ian MacLeod (10th, 16:20), and Greg Bohmke (11th, 16:22) held their own against a solid performance from Colonial Forge's front three in Brian O'Loughlin (6th, 16:15), Jordanis Lozier (7th, 16:16), and David Pennesi (9th, 16:20).  While Colonial Forge was winning the meet through three runners, Stafford (55 pts) made up the difference then gained its 20 point advantage over Colonial Forge (75 pts) in the critical #4 and #5 runner spots with Brandon Hinton (15th, 16:38) and Joey Abbatello (18th, 16:45). . The Riverbend boys (3rd, 83 pts) qualified for their school's first state meet appearance in school history, while host school Albemarle (4th, 95 pts) could very well match or better their regional finish at next week's state meet.   The Colonial Forge girls went into the regional championships considered favorites to win, despite a strong season and Cardinal District title for the defending regional champions from Osbourn Park. Osbourn Park's chances of repeat certainly were hurt when one of their top runners Kayla Tyrrell had her season cut short before the district meet due to a stress fracture injury. If Tyrrell had been in the lineup for the regional meet, it may have made things more interesting with Osbourn Park girls (88 pts) slipping to third place behind Albemarle (2nd, 87 pts) by one point, but it also might have been insignificant on the team outcome with the way which the Colonial Forge girls raced. Averaging 19:37 as a squad by placing their top five among the top 20 and under 20 minutes, Colonial Forge girls had arguably their best team performance of the season to generate lots of momentum for a state meet podium run next week. Colonial Forge showed some power up front with four ahead of Osbourn Park's first finisher with Shaina Manuel (4th, 19:21), Jenna Walker (8th, 19:21), Lilly Moore (10th, 19:34), and Hannah Dickinson (13th, 19:41). It was fitting that senior Colleen Wade, who was a member of the last regional team champions for Colonial Forge as a freshmen, wrapped up the team scoring and regional team title in 20th place with a time of 19:58 as the team's fifth finisher. The Mountain View boys were unable to defend their regional title this week and will be unable to defend their state title next week after failing to advance out of the ultra competitive Commonwealth District, but at least Coach Dave Davis will have a girls' team representing Mountain View in state competition as the Lady Wildcats finished fourth with 96 points.   Northwest Region Championship Results: Boys Race - Girls Race Northwest Region Meet Photo Gallery by Michael Somers

The Colonial Forge coaches may have picked up on Hidden Valley's idea last year by venturing down to Texas for the Nike South Invitational as the Hidden Valley girls winning last year's Nike South against eventual Nike Cross Nationals team qualifiers from the NXN South Region helped the Roanoke, VA squad qualify for the Nike Cross Nationals as an at-large berth. The NXN South Region is made up of several states, but the state of Texas dominates this region and sends the region's four automatic qualifiers (2 boys teams, 2 girls teams) on almost an annual basis. The Texas boys have proved themselves as worthy of receiving two teams to nationals, but the Texas girls have historically struggled in the mud at Portland Meadows as the 5K distance is not commonly run in girls cross country within the state of Texas as the two mile is the established distance including for the state meet. Stafford sophomore Hannah Lowery continued her great start to the 2010 cross country season by following up her dominant win at Great Meadow by shattering the course record at Loriella Park as the first girl ever under 19 minutes on the challenging 5K course in Fredericksburg with a 18:51 victory at the Chancellor Invitational. Lowery won by a large margin of one minute and 13 seconds as she went through the mile in 5:40 and just under in 12 minutes at the two mile.   The Colonial Forge boys really responded well in bouncing back from a disappointing at the Great Meadow Invitational by not only winning at Chancellor but also defeating the #1 ranked team in the state with Midlothian making their first trip ever to Loriella Park. The top four of the Colonial Forge boys really took charge of the race early on running among the top 10, while Midlothian attempted to pack it up from behind at a more controlled pace and try to reel the competition in during the final mile.   The top four of Donny Lozier (4th, 16:53), Brian O'Loughlin (5th, 16:54), David Klimek (9th, 16:59), and David Pennesi (11th, 17:01) stayed up front for Colonial Forge head coach Michael Porter through the end with all four finishing ahead of Midlothian's top finisher Brayden Burleigh (12th, 17:02). Especially missing their usual #5 and #6 runners, the front running performance by Colonial Forge's front four was huge in overcoming Midlothian's great depth through seven which also extended to the developmental race with five of the top six finishers in the JV division. Midlo's #7 finished 20 places ahead of Colonial Forge's #5, but Colonial Forge putting four ahead of Midlothian's #1 was the different maker in their 82-97 win.    The Riverbend boys finished close on Midlothian's heels for third place with 98 points led by two top 15 finishers in Shaquon Wilkins (6th, 16:55) and Ryan Kuhns (13th, 17:04), while an overachieving Stafford squad claimed fourth place with a surprising runner-up finish from senior Tyler Oliver beating virtually all of the Northwest Region's best with his time of 16:49.   The Midlothian girls executed the similar race strategy and having their team run conserative as a pack through the stages of the race as the only five runners which toed the line for them in the varsity race were together as a group through the two mile mark. As much ground as they covered in the final 1.1 miles, it was not enough real estate for them to run down the Colonial Forge girls who followed their boys with an upset as well of a top ranked Midlothian program. Shaina Manuel led the charge for the Forge girls with her highest individual finish yet in a major invitational as the race runner-up to Lowery in a time of 20:04 as she opened up a 23 second gap herself on third place.   Behind Manuel, the VA #10 ranked Colonial Forge girls put their remaining scoring five among the top 17 places with Hannah Dickinson (5th, 20:41), Mackenzie McDonald (10th, 21:03), Colleen Wade (15th, 21:11), and Lilly Moore (17th, 21:19) for a team score of 49 points compared to Midlothian's 76 point total. Midlothian had four girls really move up in the final move to probably pick off 12 runners each with Kara Dickerson (4th, 20:36), Claire Benjamin (8th, 20:53), Krista Willard (9th, 20:56), and Meghan Mulroy (12th, 21:08) but their fifth runner struggled to make the same move in the final move as Colonial Forge pulled off the major upset.   Neither team raced at full strength with Midlothian missing their top runner Marie Johnston due to illness and her kid sister Kari Johnston unable to make her high school race debut due to a soccer tournament as the younger Johnston figures to run well within Midlothian's top five this season. Colonial Forge sat out their top returning miler in sophomore Jenna Walker this weekend and still have two more likely top varsity runners this season including Hannah Somers who are still on the comeback trail from injury.   The Mountain View girls continue to impress early this season as a team likely to reach the state meet once again out of the Northwest Region as they placed third at Chancellor with 107 points and three runners in the top 16 including Mackenzie Davis (6th), Kimberley Ficenec (11th), and Lauren Braney (16th) while Jamestown really came out strong to represent Region I well finishing close behind Region II's Brentsville (4th, 109 pts) for fifth place with 114 points.   There was the potential for a clash among three top contenders for state titles this fall at Loriella Park with Woodberry Forest's Kevin Bennert, Grafton's Kyle King, and Midlothian's Brayden Burleigh. Unfortunately, a showdown between three of the state's top ranked runners in the preseason never materialized as King was held out of the race as he is training through and Burleigh had to run with his teammates for at least the first half of the race before being allowed to take off. MileStat.com visited one of the deepest programs in the state currently on Thursday with the Colonial Forge boys and girls conducting their first time trial of the year to test their fitness after a solid summer of training and 2 1/2 weeks of official practice. With music blaring and unique but actually true to form time trial with a "Tour de France" style as each runner started individually in 30 second intervals on the 2 mile loop at H.H. Poole Middle School in Stafford, the Colonial Forge squad looked very strong and fit. Despite having staggered starts, Colonial Forge boys and girls had their fastest four times each within a slim margin of separation. The Colonial Forge boys had four just over 11 minutes in the time trial with junior Brian O'Loughlin (11:02), senior David Klimek (11:09), junior David Penesi (11:09), and senior Donnie Lozier (11:11) as the team clearly has four runners capable of not only being All-Region in the Northwest Region, but capable of finishing within the top 25 at the state meet. The Colonial Forge boys have put together a lineup for this fall to seriously challenge for the school's first state cross country title. The Colonial Forge girls had five girls within 18 seconds of one another in junior Shaina Manuel (13:06), junior Makenzie McDonald (13:14), senior Colleen Wade (13:16), sophomore Jenna Walker (13:18), and senior Hannah Dickinson (13:24). While an impressive overall effort in their time trial, the Colonial Forge girls are not close to full strength with two likely top seven runners in Hannah Somers and Alyssa DeVane still coming back from injury who did not run in Thursday morning's time trial. Senior Wade, who was a member of a regional champion cross country team as an underclassmen, looks to lead a somewhat inexperienced but certainly talented Colonial Forge girls squad into big invitationals and championship season this fall.   Despite being only eight years removed from their last cross country season as runners themsevles for the Eagles, Colonial Forge coaches Michael Porter and Sean Leyh both have not only used their personal training and racing experiences but learned a great deal from some of the top older coaches in the state including in their annual summer trip to the Blue Ridge Running Camp to apply the knowledge gained to their team with their own successful philosophy which has both boys and girls for the Colonial Forge cross country team ready for a potentially big season.
