A list of the top returning individuals in each event among Region III schools from last year's outdoor season and links to full returnees rankings lists in each event. Liberty's Craig Danner is quite an athlete with versatility that he will make it a tougher time for him deciding on which event to focus on this spring. Danner was more of a 500 meter dash specialist this past winter, but moved up to the 1000 for the AA State Indoor Meet, which proved to be a wise move as Danner won his first state title in 2:34.34 performance.

Hidden Valley senior Carolyn Bethel opened her indoor season in epic style with two monster PR's in a distance double of a 4:53.56 1600 and 2:52.46 1000. Her 1600 time is a US leader, while the 1000 time puts her US #2 currently, but ranks her #9 all-time in Virginia high school indoor history. The 1600 meter time for Bethel also inserts her well up on the state all-time indoor list at #13.

A shocking upset was seen at last Thursday’s Region II Championships with Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph able to break away and defeat defending Group AA state champion and returning Foot Locker finalist Thomas Madden of Skyline. Joseph had beaten before, especially on the track with Joseph being the Group AA state champion at 1600 and 800 meters. However, anything above 1600 meters was Madden’s territory to own with personal bests of 14:59 for 5K and 8:59 for two miles. Madden will undoubtedly be out for revenge against Joseph this weekend and should setup for a great individual battle.
