After finishing fourth at last year's Virginia Indepedent Schools state cross country championships and returning five key members from that team, the Trinity boys are looking to make a historical run this year if not next year with no seniors among their top seven. The last time that Trinity Episcopal won the Prep League title was back in 1981 and the school has never won the private school state cross country title.
Under the guidance of their young coach Marcus Jones, who ran at Trinity Episcopal (2000 graduate) and ran collegiately at Bucknell University, the school has definitely put its name on the map most notably by Barbara Strehler who won multiple state titles before taking her talents to the University of Virginia. Strehler's younger twin brothers, Mac and Reider, are part of a strong young core of Trinity runners including junior captains Guy Shelby and Chris Cantone, who expect to compete for a state cross country title over the next two years.
MileStat.com visited the Trinity boys on Tuesday morning in their first workout of the season as they ease their way off their summer base mileage with a 2x2 mile tempo workout at Bandy Field (former venue for the Central Region Championships) in the West End of Richmond. Video of their workout session and interviews with Coach Jones and captains Guy Shelby and Chris Cantone below!

Several scratches of the top entrants left Trinity's Barbara Strehler out in front in the girls' mile run at the Eastern States Championships on Tuesday night at the New York Armory to make her pursuit of a sub 5 mile tougher. In her final race of the year since she plays lacrosse in the spring, Strehler had to push the pace on her own and represented the state well to lead wire-to-wire in a 5:01.54 victory, which converts to a sub 5 minute 1600 meter time. Her next competitive race will not be until she is running for the University of Virginia next fall.
The St. Christopher's boys also competed in New York as it was their first meet this season outside of their own indoor track facility. The private school state track champions turned in solid times in relays with a 1:31.74 in the 4x200, 3:28.28 in the 4x400, and 8:08.95 in the 4x800. St. Christopher's senior Alex James also had a good mark in the shot put of 54'7" for his third straight meet with a throw over 54 feet.

Barbara Strehler, the state leader in the 3200 meter run (10:58.42) and private school state champion two weeks ago in the 1600 and 1000 meter run, will be concluding her indoor season tonight in pursuit of a sub 5 mile at the Eastern State Championships held at the New York Armory. Strehler (pictured left by John Herzog), a senior at Trinity Episcopal in Richmond, will be not be competing in outdoor track for the second year in a row since she competes in lacrosse in the spring. This will be Strehler's last year of lacrosse though as she heads to UVA next fall on a scholarship for cross country and track.
She will be in a loaded race with several top distance runners from the state of New York and New Jersey as her personal best time of 5:03 two weeks ago at the VISAA State Championships ranks her as the 8th seed in the 1600 meter run tonight at 9:30 PM. Strehler ran a personal best time in the 1000 this past weekend at the Prep League/LIS Championships in 2:57 at St. Christopher's. Strehler's race can be watched live online as the meet is being webcast live on ArmoryTrack.com at the following link:

List of Virginians competing at the USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, February 7th at the Agricultural Historical Farm Park in Derwood, Maryland. A total of three Foot Locker finalists from Virginia are competing in the race with current high school seniors Thomas Porter of Mountain View and Kyle Satterwhite of Western Albemarle as well as current college freshmen at Syracuse, Griff Graves (formerly of Abingdon High School). Also in the race are two AAA state indoor champions from last year in Atlee senior Ben Dejarnette and Villanova freshmen Joe Lorusso (formerly of Oakton High School).
Graves ran well in last year's junior men 8K race with a top 10 finish, while Porter (pictured right by Margot Kelly) put himself on the national map with his third place finish at the Foot Locker Nationals in December. Race favorites include high school national record holder German Fernandez (now at Oklahoma State), who recently ran a 3:56 mile indoors and Chris Derrick (now at Stanford), who ran one of the fastest prep 5K times ever last spring at Arcadia, but Virginia could potentially have its first qualifier in years for the World Cross Country Championships with Porter leading the way.
A much smaller representation from the Virginia girls in comparison for the junior women's 6K race with only Trinity's Barbara Strehler, Thomas Jefferson's Sarah Stites and Brentsville's Allison Bartels. The race will have plenty of national stars including two of the best from this fall's Foot Locker finals in Ashley Brasovan of Florida and Allie McLaughlin of Colorado as well as many of the top college freshmen across the country.
Strehler (pictured left by John Herzog) is coming off an outstanding distance double last weekend at the St. Christopher's Invite in which she broke 11 minutes for the first time for 3200 meters at 10:58 and came back to win the 1600 in the next day in a time of 5:06. Strehler was only a few places away from a Foot Locker Nationals berth in the fall with a 14th place finish in the seeded race at Foot Locker South.
A big step up for Stites as only a high school freshmen to run with the older girls though she was one of the state's best young stars in cross country capped off with an All-American finish at the USATF National Junior Olympics held at Pole Green Park.
USA XC Championships - Junior Division Entry List
News · Dec 13, 2008
The Virginians fared well and were great hosts for the 2008 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships held at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville on Saturday. The Richmond Track & Field Club, consisting mainly of athletes from the Central Region and RIchmond area, saw three of its girls teams finishing among the top three with the youth girls, intermediate girls, and young women division teams all placing third in close team battles for the national title in particular for the intermediate girls and young women.
Barbara Strehler of Trinity ran the fastest time among all Virginians to lead the Richmond T&F Club in the young women's division with a third place time of 18:46. Also earning All-American honors in the race with Strehler from Virginia were Herndon's Hiruni Wijayaratne (6th, 19:08), Maggie Walker's Susannah Piersol (11th, 19:26), Cosby's Jenna Moye (17th, 19:49), and Lee-Davis' Stephanie Cario (20th, 20:01).
In the intermediate girls' race, Clover Hill sophomore Abby Badura was the top finisher from Virginia and the third place Richmond T&F Club with a 13th place effort of 19:26. Earning All-American honors with Badura were club teammates Clarissa Schick (15th, 19:31) of Maggie Walker and Lindsi Arrington (21st, 19:32) of Gar-Field.
Two of the state's best freshmen girls this fall competed in the youth girls 4K race with Sarah Stites (7th, 15:10) of Thomas Jefferson and Megan Moye (14th, 15:19) of Cosby both earning All-American honors with their top 25 finishes in one of the most competitive races of the meet.
None of the boys' teams were able to crack into top 3 award finishes, but there were several outstanding All-American individual performances. The young men's 5K race had three All-Americans from Virginia with Thomas Baker of Louisa leading the way in 3rd place with a time of 16:00 and then closely followed by Jefferson Forest's Josh Morris (7th, 16:02) and James River's Ted Richardson (8th, 16:03). It was a great post-season for all three runners as Baker and Richardson both ran well at Foot Locker South in the seeded race with PR runs, while Morris was not far away from qualifying for NXN at the regionals in Cary two weeks ago.
Harrison Tucker of St. Christopher's had a busy Saturday as he earned All-American honors in the young men's race early afternoon with a 16th place finish (16:16) and then made it back over to St. Christopher's for a home quad meet and ran sub 10 in the 3200 to place second. He then finished his day accepting his All-American award at Hanover High School on Saturday evening.
Ben Dejarnette may be one of the best runners in the state and hold numerous honors, but Atlee teammate Andy Hesse can brag to him that he's now an All-American over him after Hesse took one of the final All-American spots in the intermediate boys race with a 24th place run of 16:42.
Another star runner is on his way to join Coach Morgan and the stellar Midlothian program with 8th grader Sean Willard, who earned All-American honors with a time of 13:47 to place 15th in the youth boys' 4K race.

Marsico & Wilson willing to accept first defeats of season for tickets to San Diego & Foot Locker Nationals
Virginia runners will be racing for the opportunity to compete in the 30th anniversary of the Foot Locker National cross country championships on Saturday at the South regional in Charlotte, North Carolina. The state of Virginia was well represented last fall in San Diego for the national race with a total of six finalists (four boys, two girls). Can 2009 Foot Locker South turn out to be just as successful for the state which draws the largest participants outside of the homestate North Carolina? With four boys entrants having run faster state meet times than 2007 finalists Thomas Porter and Michael Hammond as well as two girls having went the entire season undefeated so far, the chances of a repeat performance are strong. We shall see though as the South Region expects to have two competitive seeded races. More...

A smile is not the normal expression worn on the faces of those running a 5000 meter race, especially when there's less than a mile to go and the view of the course is dominated by a steep, heartbreaking hill. Yet a genuine smile was what filled the face of Trinity senior, Barbara Strehler, as she charged up the hill of the USATF Virginia Association Championships at Pole Green Park this past Saturday.

Note from meet management on disqualification of Peninsula Catholic boys team: The VISAA Cross Country Games Committee disqualified Peninsula Catholic School as a team in the Division 2 Boys championship, but we allowed the PCS individuals as unattached so no team points will be awarded to PCS. Two reasons for a team disqualification: 1)Two bandit runners were stopped during the race and disqualified for not wearing a uniform and 2) subsequently they belonged to PCS who ran more than 12 runners on the team. These rules were fully explained on the entry form mailed to each coach, e-mailed to each AD, listed on the VISAA website, and listed on Milestat. At the awards ceremony today, we purposely did not publish individual results or team results for the Division 2 Boys' Race. However, we did hand out individual awards to the top 20, and we awarded plaques to the qualified top three teams excluding PCS without referring to their disqualification.

Trinity's Barbara Strehler won the Coastal Division in a time of 19:14, which was impressive considering 19:13 was the cutoff for a top 10 performance in the more competitive invitational division earlier.

Despite losing their long-time coach Mike Schroer after last outdoor track season, The Potomac School's top runners have continued to press on and appear to not be missing a beat after seeing two individuals win titles at Saturday's Woodberry Forest Invite on the home course of the Virginia Independent Schools State Championships. Potomac School sophomore Campbell Ross, younger brother of the 2007 VIS state champion Johns Ross, won by a convincing margin of 27 seconds against some of the better private school runners in the state with a 16:50 win.
Meanwhile, Potomac School junior Anneka Wilson (pictured above by Ted Plunkett) has now improved her odds of winning a state championship this fall by winning at Woodberry Forest against last year's close state runner-up Barbara Strehler of Trinity in an impressive time of 19:23 given the heat and challenging course. Fork Union boys and The Potomac School girls were crowned private school state champions at Saturday's VISAA State Indoor Track and Field Championships in Richmond. Photo by David Fleenor Norfolk Collegiate freshmen Nefertiti Smith was spectatular with four individual titles in the long jump (18'6.50"), triple jump (37'10'), 55 meter hurdles (8.31), and 55 meter dash (7.33). Smith's efforts helped her win both Most Valuable Runner and Most Valuable Field Events Performer. Johns Ross of The Potomac School might have had the best individual race of the meet clocking a solo 9:20.51 3200 as he lapped the entire field. However, it was one of the lap-ees in Fork Union's Jeremy Haney who was named Most Valuable Runner of the meet as the 3200 was his third race of the meet after winning the 1600 (4:31.88) and 500 (1:08.09) meter races earlier before helping pace along his teammates Darren Simpson and Patrick Hayes to take the next three places after Ross in the 3200. Haney was not the only Fork Union athlete with a big day to help the team pull away from challenger St. Christopher's as Austin Ofoma leaped to first place showings in both the long jump (22'8.75") and triple jump (43'6.75"). As a result, Ofoma was selected as the Most Valuable Field Events Performer for the boys. Barbara Strehler of Trinity was a runaway winner in the 1600 (5:09.73) and 3200 (11:38.09), while Anneka Wilson of The Potomac School was a runner-up to Strehler in both distance events and helped her team follow up their outdoor state title from last May. Patricia Brandt also played a key role for The Potomac School as the 500 meter champion and anchor leg for the winning 4x400 meter relay. The Virginia girls will look to improve upon only sending one representative last year to San Diego with Foot Locker South champion and Foot Locker National runner-up Aurora Scott, but that is not even a guarantee with the great female runners within the South region as well as the uncertainty of what kind of shape the returning Foot Locker South champion is in. With six returning Foot Locker National finalists as well as some national caliber runners back who failed to make it in the top 10 last year with the likes of Nike Indoor Nationals 2 mile champion Ashley Brasovan from Florida and 4:47 1600 meter best Emily Reese from Georgia. and 4:47 1600 meter best Emily Reese from Georgia, the seeded race will be ultra competitive. The two best bets outside of Scott to finish in the top ten will be the top two finishers from the AAA state race two weeks ago in Kathleen Lautzenheiser (pictured left by John Herzog) of Midlothian and Lia DiValentin of Chantilly.

Johns Ross continued his breakthrough cross country season with a 15:22 win at the William & Mary Invite, while runner-up Andrew Colley (15:24) led NTN SE #3 Jamestown to a team title in front of the home crowd in Williamsburg. Thanks to Maryland, Virginia cross country fans did not get to see a great showdown between two rising stars in Tallwood's Octavia Rinehardt and Trinity's Barbara Strehler for the varsity A race. To adhere to meet sanctioning rules for the Maryland schools, Trinity's Barbara Strehler had to be bumped down to the later and lesser competitive varsity C division. Nonetheless, Rinehardt and Strehler pressed on with dominating individual wins with Rinehardt as the day's fastest in 18:33, while Strehler finished a minute and half ahead of the next finisher two hours later in the C race with a time of 18:44. It would have been great to see both go head to head as they were definitely ready to race today. After a pleasant week of training for many Virginians with cooler temperatures, the humid weather decided to reappear on Saturday for the William & Mary Invitational to affect times. However, the humidity did not stop Tallwood's Octavia Rinehardt, Potomac School's John Ross, and Trinity's Barbara Strehler from dominating individual performances. All three were relatively unknowns in comparison to some of the more well known top returning runners, but have quickly emerged this fall to be just as good as the best of them. Meanwhile, the Jamestown boys survived a self-induced scare with the inability to differentiate yellow jerseys. Note: Waiting on verification of varsity A girls team results before completing meet summary as results sent in to post online were different than corrected results at the meet in determining the team champions between Western Branch and C.
