Cabell Midland Moves to the Top of Team Rankings Douglas McDaniel Sep 30, 2009

Cabell Midland claims top team rankings for girls and boys. Some of the fast times were put up on the same course. As we get more into the season, a clearer picture will develop.

Jorden Thornton, a freshman from Cabell Midland, moved into the top 3 rankings with her 19:12.59 at the Adidas Saturday Night Lights  held at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio.

The Cabell Midland girls sit atop the WVRunners team standings with an average time of 20:13.93 for the top 5 runners.

Jefferson led by the top ranked runner, Alyssa Boucher, is in second, Hurricane is third, followed by University High School , Morgantown , and Preston

As with all Cross Country rankings, it is not an exact science as courses and conditions are different for each meet.

WVRunners team rankings for boys have Cabell Midland, led by freshman Jacob Burcham, on top with an average time of 16:46 for their top 5 runners.

The past weekend may have been a slow week as far as the number of meets, but the times posted were not slow.

Cody Pelliccioni, a junior from Morgantown, followed up his win at the Red, White, and Blue Classic with another dominating performance at the Mountaintop Combo held at Preston High School in Kingwood. Lydia Martinelli, a senior from University High School, was just as impressive as she took first place honors at the Mountaintop Combo with a 34 second victory in 20:17 over Molly Summers of Grafton who crossed the finish line in 20:51.

Moving into the #2 spot for the girl’s rankings is Sami Harris a freshman from Charleston Catholic with her victory at the Battle Run Invitational held at Nicholas County Cross Country course in Summersville. Running 3 days later in the Ripley Covered Bridge Invitational she took 2nd place in 20:11 to Maggie Drazba, a freshman, of St. Marys. Drazba took top honors with her winning time of 20:02. Drazba has had several top finishes this year including an earlier victory in the A/AA race at the Geico Classic.

Brandon Doughty, a junior, from Jefferson and the 3rd ranked boy took the boy’s race by 34 seconds in 17:40.

Pelliccioni rises to the top of WV Runners High School Rankings Douglas McDaniel Sep 15, 2009

WV Runners Cross County High School rankings saw a big swing at the top for the boys and the top 2 remained unchanged for the girls. This weekend’s action has elevated the bar.

Defending AAA State Champion Cody Pelliccioni, a junior from Morgantown High School, left little doubt that he is back to defend his State title. This past weekend at the Red, White, and Blue Classic held at the Schenley Oval 5K course in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Pelliccioni took 2nd place in 15:36. This is a 5:02 mile pace over the 3.1 mile course.

Hedgesville Senior High School easily took the boys AAA race by a 24 point margin over Jefferson 92 - 68. It was a total team effort as Jordan Reed claimed the only races for Hedgesville. AAA Girls

The AAA girls broke 5 West Virginia State track meet records. Three were in relay events and two were by individuals. Taylor Brown a junior from Jefferson was involved with two of those records. Brown broke the State Meet record in the 300m hurdles with a clocking of 44.34. Jefferson’s 4 x 100m relay team broke a 29 year old record of 49.20 held by the 1980 Wheeling Park ladies with a time of 48.58. Recaps of all 6 races including outstanding performances and State records will be posted. Photos and videos from Danny Farley will be uploaded this morning. Please check back later  for more.

(Complete Results are posted. There are 62 National Elite performances. Please upload any photos right to the meet page.)

Here is a photo of the Cabell Midland State Champion AAA Girls 4 x 400m relay team.

West Virginia State Championships begin today in Charleston at Laidley Field. Field events start at 2:00 and so do the track events. Track events will start with Single A girls 4 x 800m relay.

Some of the favored teams to win a State title are St. Mary's for Single A girls, and Wheeling Central or Doddridge County for the boys. In Double A, Oak Hill is a strong favorite among the girl teams, but the boys Double A looks to be a close battle between Ravenswood and Oak Glen. In Triple A Jefferson and Hurricane are a toss up for the girls. Hedgesville and Jefferson look like the clear favorites to compete for the boys title.

WVRunners to Include Middle School Coverage Douglas McDaniel Apr 21, 2009

Due to many requests, WVRunners will cover middle school. I will add schools, athletes, meets, venues, and performances. For a performance to be entered, the meet needs to be in Hy-Tek or RaceTab format. There is a link to Race Tab under articles and it may be found in the drop down bar under Resources.

Entering schools in the data base will take some time. So, I will add them as meets are entered.

If you would like to be a team administrator, please let me know. There is only so much one person can do. If you would like to help, I would like to hear from you. You do not need to be an admin to add photos.

Also, I want to welcome all of the people who have recently joined WVRunners and I hope you find the information and resources valuable. We have seen a 100% gain in membership this year. Due to the masses using the Milesplit Network sometimes our rankings or updates are delayed. If you are missing a performance, meet results, or anything else, please let me know.

Please begin using the forum to communicate with each other. Also, it is a place that I visit often to look for suggestions. Thank you for using WVRunners.

Rola of Concord University Ranked Nationally in the 800m Douglas McDaniel Apr 15, 2009

Szymon Rola a freshman from Concord University is sitting in 11th place in the NCAA Division II rankings in the 800m. Competing in the fast heat at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitation held at Lannigan Field on the campus of the University of Virginia Rola placed 6th with a time of 1:52.45. With this time, Rola has an excellent chance to make it to Nationals. Rola has Concord University records in the 800m and 1500m (3:58.50). He will be attempting to qualify for Nationals this coming weekend at the Wendy's West Virginia Wesleyan Invitational.

Rola came to Concord University via Fork Union Military Academy located in Fork Union, VA. He is a natural born Polish citizen and has competed on the world scale with the Poland Junior National team.

Next year will be Rola's first year of eligibility in cross-country . He will be joining a team that has 5 returning WVIAC All Conference members. Three of those returning are seniors who red-shirted last season. The addition of the amazing Rola solidfies the Concord University team as the early favorite for the WVIAC crown. Don't be surprised to see them highly ranked in the East Regionals. Coach Mike Cox has several outstanding recruits coming in to strengthen the already deep team and position Concord for the future.

Middle Schoolers Burcham and Davis are National Leaders Douglas McDaniel Apr 11, 2009

Middle School rankings are far from perfect because very few middle schools report meets on a national scale. However, I thought it would be nice to recognize two individuals who lead the U.S. Milesplit middle school rankings.

At the Hurricane Middle school Invitation, Travis Davis of George Washington Middle School Pole vaulted a nations best of 9'-06" to lead all middle school boys. He surpassed Sherman Lake from Tuscaloosa, Alabama by 3".

Jacob Burcham of Barboursville Middle  has pulled off the difficult double in leading in both the 800m and 3200m. Burcham's 800m time of 2:05.80 is especially fast for middle school boys and his coach says he can go even faster this year. By winning his race by over 13 seconds he was not pushed. In the 3200m Burcham won by well over a minute in posting an incredible time of 10:31. 70, and now leads the nation by over 50 seconds from the meets entered and posted on the Milesplit network.
