The Fork Union boys and St. Catherine's girls successfully defended their VISAA state track team titles on Saturday at St. Christopher's School in Richmond. Three boy's meet records were set including two in the relays by the St. Christopher's boys 4x800 at 7:57.10 and the Woodberry Forest boys 4x400 at 3:22.44 as well as another monster throw from Fork Union's Jordan Roach in discus at 182'10". A remarkable number of four juniors in the girls' meet will be returning in 2013 as double defending state championships including Liberty Christian junior Gena Pinick in the shot put (38'1.50") and discus (105'4"), Collegiate junior Hannah Myers in the 100 hurdles (15.66) and 300 hurdles (46.41), Liberty Christian junior Micah Brickhill in the 400 meter dash (58.80) and 800 meter run (2:17.73), Randolph-Macon Academy junior Alexandria Fleming in the 100 meter dash (13.04) and 200 meter dash (26.78). Meanwhile, St. Catherine's freshmen Bri Miller also got herself two individual state titles with winning leaps of 16'9.50" and 35'9.50" in the long jump and triple jump respectively. Fork Union senior teammates Avery Martin and Michael Idziak pressed each other to swift times in both the 1600 and 800 meter races with Martin as the 4:16.58 winner in the 1600 and Idziak as the 1:54.78 victor in the 800. The FUMA boys also were dominant in the field events including Roach's mark in the discus and event winners Staton Mayfield in the pole vault with a 14'6" clearance and Obiero Okeyo reaching out for a big personal best mark of 46'8.25" in the triple jump for the team champions. The Liberty Christian boys were upset by Woodberry Forest in the 4x400 at meet's end, but had the top two finishers in the 400 dash finals earlier with great times from William Miller (48.49) and Duane Cargill (49.39). Trinity boys swept the top 3 places in the 3200 and were led by senior Guy Shelby clocking in at 9:27 for the 8 lap event. St. Catherine's girls racked up points and built up their margin of victory over the Liberty Christian girls in the distance races including two PR runs and 18 points from Libby Parrish (1st, 5:10) and Liz Spruil (2nd, 5:12) in the 1600 meter run, while Spruill came back to win the 3200 and Parrish took runner-up in the 800.
