Regardless of the misfortune found widespread among his top competition in Group AA's elite distance runners as of late, Western Albemarle senior David Taylor was not going to waste the opportunity to become the dominant runner for this past indoor season as Taylor won a pair of state titles in the 1600 and 3200 at last month's VHSL Group AA State Championships.

The Blacksburg track program has been known for producing many great distance runners for decades and in recent years, the program has been on another upswing as one of the state's very best under the direction of coach James Demarco. This past indoor track season was unique as the top athlete on their girls' track team was not a miler or two miler, but a sprinter and slowly but surely becoming a middle distance runner in Kendell Wiles.
The Group AA boys' race for the team title was everything that you could ask for. It all came down to the most exciting race of a track meet in the final event of every meet in 4x400 meter relay. Blacksburg, Lafayette, and Brunswick were all in contention for first place and were loading up strong relays to go for it. Blacksburg held the lead going into the last race of the day with 51 points, while Lafayette (48 pts) and Brunswick (48) were tied for second place.
There will be a state championship meet at Liberty University next year, but instead of the current Group AA classification hosting its indoor state meet at the Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg, four classifications will be competing with 1A-3A combined and 4A competing separately in the new 6 classificaiton system to be implemented by the Virginia High School League public schools. In the final Group AA state indoor track & field championship meet, the Tabb girls returned back to the Peninsula with the state team title trophy.

The daughter of two former high school track stars, Tabb junior Micah Hanks had a naturally good gene pool to pull from to eventually become a track star herself. Hanks has a lot of momentum heading into next weekend's VHSL Group AA State Indoor Championships after throwing down an impressive triple at the Region I Championships in winning all three sprint races in personal best times of 7.25 (prelims) in the 55 meter dash, 40.28 in the 300 meter dash, and 1:17.36 in the 500 meter dash.
Lafayette junior Derek Holdsworth exhibits some of the greatest range right now in Virginia high school track & field. In Group AA, Holdsworth has posted some of the fastest times this season in the 300 (#6 36.17), 500 (#5 1:06.57), and 1000 (#2 2:33.91). Holdsworth won his first state individual title last year as a sophomore indoors in Lynchburg in the 500 meter dash and is not only hoping to gain his second individual title two Saturdays from now at Liberty University, but help his Lafayette Rams squad to a team title.
