Duplicate Performance by Holt Twins Brandon Miles Oct 4, 2014

The Holt twins, Heather and Ashley, were inseparable at birth and apparently are inseparable as well as high school cross country runners. Freshmen at George C. Marshall High School in Northern Virginia, the Holt sisters went 1-2 crossing the line virtually at the same time at the Octoberfest Invitational on Saturday with both timed at 18:38.

6A South Regional Coverage Brandon Miles Nov 7, 2013

First race of the season for senior Nikki Park after missing the entire season before due to injury and she showed a remarkable level of fitness coming back from her season-long obstacle in a runner-up individual finish to help lead the Ocean Lakes girls to a dominant team victory at the 6A South Regional. Her return certainly bolsters the lineup for Ocean Lakes to the point that they have to be considered a strong contender for a top 3 state meet finish next Friday in the Group 6A race at Great Meadow. More coverage to come from the 6A South Regional!

Week #2 of MileStat.com's preseason XC practice tour takes us down to Virginia Beach to visit the Ocean Lakes team for a fartlek workout at Seashore Park. The Ocean Lakes cross country squad has been one of the most successful programs in the Eastern Region over the last decade and beyond under the guidance of Coach Mike Nestor. The Ocean Lakes program starts a new chapter with no Eastern Region anymore and in the 6A South Region, which includes adds in some of the former Central Region and Northwest Region schools to make their regional meet before the state meet more of a challenge and competitive.

2013 Virginia XC Girls Computer Composite Pre-Season Team Rankings Brandon Miles Jul 27, 2013

The Washington-Lee girls may not have been considered one of the top tier teams in the state of Virginia in cross country last fall, but their impressive track times and development over the spring time has the computer composite team rankings which takes into account numerous statistics from both cross country and track sees them as a team to look out and ranking among the best for this upcoming cross country season.

Group AAA XC Rankings & State Meet Preview Brandon Miles Nov 6, 2012

It is only fitting that in the last year of the existence of Group AAA as it currently exists before the six class system is implemented next year that arguably the most successful two girls’ cross country programs historically will be competing for the final Group AAA state cross country title (in the 3 class system). Lake Braddock was the team of the decade in the 1980s, while Midlothian was the team of the decade in the 2000s.

Eastern Region XC Championships Coverage Brandon Miles Nov 2, 2012

At the 2012 Eastern Region Meet, 1-2 individual finishes were enjoyed by the Ocean Lakes girls with Nicole Park and Olivia Bethune as well as the Kellam boys with Billy Boros and David Gregory. The Hickory boys kept Ocean Lakes from sweeping the team titles for a third year in a row in the final Eastern Region Cross Country Championships.

Eastern Region Meet Preview Brandon Miles Oct 31, 2012

The final Eastern Region Cross Country Championships will be held Thursday, November 1st at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. It has been tough for any Eastern Region team over recent years to beat any cross country squad produced by coach Mike Nestor at Ocean Lakes. The Ocean Lakes cross country program will attempt to make it a sweep of the team titles for the third consecutive year.

Group AAA Girls Pre-Season XC Team Rankings Brandon Miles Aug 10, 2012

More than any other classification in Virginia, the Group AAA girls will be a fairly wide open battle for the state team title with nearly a handful of teams with a legitimate shot. Five teams in particular with Oakton, Colonial Forge, Lake Braddock, Midlothian, and Ocean Lakes all have their eyes on the prize of being the last team called up on the podium at Great Meadow in November.

Top 10 XC Coaches in VA: #9 Mike Nestor Brandon Miles Aug 23, 2011

The Ocean Lakes squads, coached by Mike Nestor, have often dispelled the belief that flatlanders cannot run hilly courses through competing well at major invitationals outside of the Tidewater area as well as leading the Eastern Region often with respectable finishes at the state championships at Great Meadow.

Beach District Championships Preview Brandon Miles Feb 8, 2011

Virtual meet preview for the Beach District Championships predicts the Ocean Lake boys and Green Run girls to win team titles. In a possible trial run to see if he can pull off the feat at the state meet, Justin Burke (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) is entered and set to compete in all sprint events of the 55, 300, and 500 meter dash at the district meet. The 300 meter dash has been Burke's strongest event this season as shown with an impressive US #2 34.70 performance at Boo Williams last Saturday.

Coach's Corner: Coach Mike Nestor (Ocean Lakes) Brandon Miles Nov 8, 2010

The Ocean Lakes cross country program coached by Mike Nestor has proven that being a school from the Eastern Region does not automatically mean that you cannot compete with the best cross country teams in the fall and distance runners during the track season. Coach Nestor has coached two individual state champions in Stacey Nobles and Drew Paisley as well as an indoor state champion girls' 4x800 meter relay to go along with the numerous district and regional champion teams featuring many individuals qualifying for multiple state meets and All-State honors. At last week's Eastern Region Championships, Coach Nestor achieved a first since becoming the head coach of both programs a decade ago with the Ocean Lakes boys and girls sweeping the team titles. With few losses due to graduation from their current top seven for both boys and girls for the 2011 cross country season, Ocean Lakes can certainly try to go for another first next fall to become the first Eastern Region school with a pair of squads on the state meet podium. MileStat.com interviewed Coach Nestor following their regional title double as the teams hope to both break into the top five in state competition on Saturday...

Albemarle Invite: Mattie Webb & Kyle King are clear cut best of Group AA and maybe all of VA? Brandon Miles Oct 9, 2010

Mattie Webb 18:14 Kyle King 15:37 Photos by John Herzog   On an unseasonably warm day with temperatures rising to the mid 80s at Panorama Farms in the afternoon start for the Albemarle Invitational (due to SAT testing date), two runners were not to be broken by the heat or the top competition against them in Western Albemarle senior Mattie Webb and Grafton senior Kyle King. Both Webb and King were pre-season favorites in Group AA and their races at the Albemarle Invite only further reinforced them as the top runners in their classification. Webb had three top 10 ranked runners in the race against her including Group AAA state title contender Hannah Lowery of Stafford, while King was facing two individuals who prize the Group AA state cross country title which he won as a junior last year. In similar races, Webb and King dropped their challengers by the two mile mark to roll to decisive wins with final times of 18:14 for Webb and 15:37 for King.   The Albemarle boys appear to have gotten a lift from transfer Chris Springer coming back from injury and inserting freshmen and full-time JV football player Ryan Thomas into their top five as Ben Deal, Austin McPhillips, and Adam Visokay took care of the rest as their top three finishing among the top 20. The Patriots claimed the team title over Commonwealth District and Northwest Region rivals Stafford and Riverbend, while cross town rival Western Albemarle experienced an off day following their great runner-up performance at Maymont.     The Ocean Lakes girls have to feel very good about their chances of finishing high at the state meet this year after a second straight trip to the western part of the state for a hilly 5K course against top competition. Last week, the defending Eastern Region champions placed a respectably close second to the top Northern Region squad Thomas Jefferson and this week notched a comfortable team victory against higher ranked squads Western Albemarle and Osbourn Park. Audrey Batzel led Ocean Lakes with a sixth place finish, while the remaining five were well packed with a group featuring a pair of older and younger sister combos in the Bethune's and Park's.   Albemarle Invitational Results: Varsity Boys - Varsity Girls - JV Boys #1 - JV Boys #2 - JV Girls - Middle School Boys - Middle School Girls   Photo Gallery by John Herzog - 1,609 total photos from all high school races.   Race Videos: Varsity Boys - Varsity Girls - JV Red Boys - JV Blue Boys - JV Girls - Middle School Boys - Middle School Girls   Video Interviews: Kyle King - Mattie Webb - Albemarle Boys Top 3 - Audrey Batzel - Colin Taylor - Krista DeCault   More to come from Albemarle Invitational including race videos, photo gallery, and interviews!

Preseason XC Tour Stop #3 - Ocean Lakes Brandon Miles Aug 14, 2010

MileStat.com visited arguably the Eastern Region's consistently top cross country program over the past decade in Ocean Lakes on Friday morning at Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia Beach. With the flat terrain of the sea level area, Mount Trashmore is one of the few places for teams like Ocean Lakes to get hill work in and prepare for racing more challenging cross country courses later this season. Their workout on Friday included repeats on a 1 mile loop which hit several hills and drills as well on a hill incline. More to come from the practice including photos. Workout videos & interviews posted below.   Coach Nestor Pre-Workout Interview The Warm-Up The Work-Out: 2x1 Mile Hill Loop Coach Nestor Post-Workout Interview Jon Winters Interview Audrey Batzel Interview

Blacksburg & Ocean Lakes next stop on pre-season practice tour Brandon Miles Aug 11, 2010

The Blacksburg and Ocean Lakes High School cross country teams are the next stops on MileStat.com's pre-season cross country practice tour as we go from one end of the state to the other end of the state in one day for a workout with the Blacksburg team on Thursday morning then Friday morning with the Ocean Lakes team in Virginia Beach.   The Blacksburg boys are the defending Group AA state champions and return an en even stronger team in 2010 with potential hopes of Nike Cross Nationals after only graduating one member of their top seven and also adding incoming freshmen Michael Carter (4:43 1600). Older brother George Carter leads the Bruins, who continued to develop in the track season with five guys back who have ran 10:00 or faster for 3200 meters.  Carter individually is searching for first state title and figures to be in the mix with last year's top two finishers Kyle King and Tommy Curtin for the Group AA cross country state crown with his personal 5K best of 15:48 and finishing as a state runner-up twice in track as a junior.   The Blacksburg girls enjoyed the NXN experience as the top finishing team ever in meet history from the Southeast, but lost several key members from last year's team including the Stevens twins and Leah Fitchett but still are led by two talents in Hannah Brown and Sarah Dorrell who ran on Blacksburg's national record breaking DMR. Blacksburg coach James Demarco's toughest task this season will be filling out the remaining top five and developing them to match up with the likes of defending Group AA state champions Hidden Valley and a Western Albemarle squad looking to leapfrog both squads. As a sub 5 minute 1600 performer and 800 meter state champion in track, junior Hannah Brown is looking to translate her success on the track oval to the cross country course after dealing with illness and setbacks last fall.   The Ocean Lakes program has steadily been one if not the best cross country program in the Eastern Region since coach Mike Nestor took over both programs just under a decade ago. The team and their coach are still riding high from winning their first state track team title this past spring behind long jump state record holder Justin Hunter and 1600 meter state champion Drew Paisley. Paisley had led the Ocean Lakes boys for the past few years, but now moves onto run for the University of Virginia so it is up to senior Jon Winters to pick up the load to continue the Ocean Lakes tradition of success and become the top team in the Eastern Region once again. Ocean Lakes, Eastern Region champions two years ago, had to play third fiddle last year to Grassfield and Western Branch, but Winters who closed his track season with a 4:24 1600 PR and his younger brother Brandon Winters and David Harrison, are three of five returnees back from their top 7 last year.   Ocean Lakes girls have some spots to fill to round out their top five to repeat as regional champions with Princess Anne, Grassfield, and others expected to present stronger challenges, but will be led by one of the pre-season favorite to win the Eastern Region title in Audrey Batzel, who ended her outdoor season running a 5:05 1600 PR at the state meet.

Justin Hunter wins the USATF Junior Nationals long jump title with 25-10.75 mark! Brandon Miles Jun 24, 2010

Justin Hunter (pictured by Ryan Kelly) bettered his state record and US leading mark in the long jump by winning the USATF Junionr Nationals title in the long jump with a final attempt and 0.2 wind legal mark of 25'10.75". The recent graduate of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach started off the competition with a initial mark of 24'9.75", which still would have placed him first ahead of eventual runner-up Carlton Lavong from Pennsylvania (24'7.25"). His top two finish and US #18 all-time performance qualifies Hunter to compete on the World Juniors team, which will be in competition July 19th through July 25th in Moncton, Canada. Hunter is the first high school boys champion from Virginia in the meet since Mike Morrison (pole vault) back in 2005 and joins Keith Holley, who previously was the only USATF Junionr National long jump prep champion from Virginia back in 1988 with a mark of 25'5.25"  The University of Tennessee bound football and track star will compete tomorrow afternoon in the triple jump.

1/19 VA High School Indoor Track & Field Team Power Rankings Brandon Miles Jan 19, 2010

A new #1 ranked boys' team in Virginia with Ocean Lakes moving into the top spot and previous #1 Western Branch slipping to #3 behind Stafford. Ocean Lakes team is a pretty much two man show with jumper Justin Hunter and distance runner Drew Paisley. Hunter is capable of winning all three jumping events at the AAA State Meet, while Paisley figures to contend in any distance race which he competes in. These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We took the individual rankings and relay rankings and scored them as a normal meet: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Athlete Spotlight: Drew Paisley Brandon Miles Nov 10, 2009

Three years ago at the 2006 VHSL State Championships, a young Drew Paisley was the top finishing freshmen in the entire meet as a ninth grader at Ocean Lakes High School. Since then other runners have risen and emerged to become the best in the class of 2010 runners, but Paisley will have the opportunity in his final state cross country meet this weekend to again regain his status on the top of the class. Coming off a mild upset win at the Eastern Region Meet against Blake Theroux (the top returnee from last year's AAA state race), Paisley will be an underdog once again as he attempts to become the first Eastern Region boys cross country state champion since Seneca Lassiter of Lafayette won back in 1993. He is also receiving some pretty good advice and support heading into this weekend from last year's girls state champion and Ocean Lakes grad Stacey Nobles, who happens to be Paisley's girlfriend and knows a thing or two about being an underdog heading into a state championship race.

Eastern Region Meet Summary Brandon Miles Nov 6, 2009

The Grassfield boys regained regional bragging rights in claiming their first Eastern Region cross country team title over rival Western Branch with a top five spread of 56 seconds and all five scorers among the top 20 ranging from times 15:52 to 16:49. Despite losing their top three runners from a year ago, the Ocean Lakes girls repeated easily as champions by a 46 point margin.  Landstown senior Stephanie Frenchik maintained her regional dominance with a personal best 18:22 win, while Drew Paisley made it a Beach District individual sweep as the Ocean Lakes senior scored a mild upset 15:37 victory.

Athlete Spotlight: Stacey Nobles (Ocean Lakes) Brandon Miles Oct 21, 2008

Ocean Lakes senior Stacey Nobles (pictured right by Andy Paisley) has been virtually unbeatable thus far this season as her only loss has came at the Octoberfest Invitational against arguably the hottest runner in the state right now in Anneka Wilson of The Potomac School in a season best 5K time of 18:20. Nobles has scored major invitational wins at the Chesapeake Invitational, against virtually all of their top competion for the Eastern Region title, and at the Albemarle Invitational, which asserted herself as one of the top state meet challengers in Group AAA with a victory in Charlottesville. A two-time All-State performer in cross country, Nobles will be hoping to better her fifth place showing at Great Meadow last November and potentially compete for first place on November 8th. Her performances thus far this season have earned her a top 5 ranking among all high school runners in Virginia. MileStat.com's Brandon Miles interviewed Nobles as she prepares for Wednesday's Beach District Championships at Sportsplex in Virginia Beach with her Eastern Region top ranked Ocean Lakes squad.

10/8 VA High School XC Rankings - Top 10 Girls Teams Brandon Miles Oct 9, 2008

Midlothian girls will be seeking redemption at Manhattan, while Thomas Jefferson and Lake Braddock girls will face off for the first time this fall to establish Northern Region supremacy heading into championship season at Glory Days. Bishop O'Connell girls want to show they belong as well and can run with the top teams at Bull Run Regional Park. Top ranked Blacksburg girls should win big at Albemarle, but Ocean Lakes and Osbourn Park hope to make them sweat a little.

10/8 VA High School XC Boys Team Rankings Brandon Miles Oct 8, 2008

#1 and #2 ranked teams face off for the first time this season to settle the debate (for now at least) at Saturday's Manhattan Invitational. Jamestown and Oakton boys have been head and shoulders better than the rest of the competition so far this fall, but both will have their hands full when they race against each other and a loaded field at the Manhattan Invitational. Meanwhile, Glory Days Grill Invitational will feature 6 schools which are ranked among the top 10 currently led by the Octoberfest champs from James Robinson, who are racing in their fourth major invitational in as many weekends and so far have improved their team performance each weekend.

2008 Pre-Season XC Previews: Beach District Brandon Miles Jul 29, 2008

Photo by Andy Paisley The Beach District boys' race should look something like this year. Not too different from last year with a  Kellam runner running way out in front then followed by a pack of Ocean Lakes harriers. Bobby Peavey of Kellam should easily defend his district title, while also looking ahead to bigger wins at the regional and state meet. He will be more interested at the district meet if his team can give the defending team champions from Ocean Lakes a scare. The Dolphins return a potent top three in Drew Paisley, Conor Doan, and Seth Cunningham, but also had four graduations from their 2007 top seven. Meanwhile, Kellam returns their entire top 6 from a district runner-up squad last year. The Ocean Lakes girls could possibly have a perfect score at the district meet with the top four returnees from last year's race including All-State cross country runner Stacey Nobles. Landstown's Stephanie Frenchik could stop those plans of a top 5 sweep though as she really improved during the track season with a 3200 best of 11:22 as well as running on the state champion 4x800 meter relay.

A memorial for Lowery is scheduled for Friday at Ocean Lakes High School at 3 PM followed by another service at 4 PM at St. John's the Apostle Church in Virginia Beach. State cross country: Rinehardt and Western Branch girls take third Nov 10, 2007

Photo by Ted Plunkett The goal of every runner who comes to the Group AAA state cross country meet is to make it on the awards podium. That means placing in the top 15 individually or top three as a team. Tallwood senior Octavia Rinehardt and Western Branch’s girls both achieved those goals, placing third on a cold Saturday morning at Great Meadow. Rinehardt ran a personal-best 18 minutes, 5.9 seconds, the fastest time ever posted by an Eastern Region girlsat the state meet. It’s also the sixth-fastest time overall at the state meet. Octavia Rinehardt was running so smooth and effortlessly Thursday afternoon that it looked like she was taking a stroll through the park. Rinehardt, a Tallwood senior, was running in Bells Mill Park, but she was far from strolling. No, she was dominating as she breezed around the course in a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 18.10 seconds to win her first Eastern Region cross country title. “I just wanted to run my race and go for a good time more than anything,” said Rinehardt, who won by 25 seconds. Beach cross country: No more hanging back for Ocean Lakes Oct 25, 2007

Photo by Andy Paisley Every runner at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex course knew that both of Ocean Lakes’ teams have been snakes in the Beach District grass all season. And at the Beach District cross country championship meet on Wednesday, they decided to strike. Ocean Lakes coach Mike Nestor’s strategy of saving his top runners’ energy by withholding them from regular district meets paid immediate dividends, as both the boys and girls notched dominant victories. The “I thought we were the fresher team today,” Nestor said. “We ran better as a group today. We packed it up real well and they looked good.”Read full story...

Or should run at Ocean Lakes for coach Mike Nestor, who each year has one of top cross country programs in the Eastern Region? Doan chose the latter. "I think it's good to have a separate kind of relationship," Caleb said. "If I was with (my dad) the whole time, it would have been crazy. So it was good to get away." His dad agreed.Read full story...

Eastern Region title favorites are set after Chesapeake Invite Brandon Miles Sep 30, 2007

William & Mary Invitational Preview Brandon Miles Sep 21, 2007

More than 80 schools will be represented at Saturday's William & Mary Invitational as many outstanding cross country runners and teams from Virginia, Maryland, DC, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina will be spread out among the three varsity race divisions. Leading the individuals will be newly minted stars with Foot Locker South rankings in Virginia private school runners Johns Ross (pictured above by Linda D'Amato) of The Potomac School and Barbara Strehler of Trinity. The Jamestown boys will be the overwhelming team favorites with none of their fellow NTN regionally ranked Virginia squads present to take on the NTN Southeast #3 ranked Eagles on their home course at Eastern State Hospital. Meanwhile, Eastern Region title contenders in the Western Branch and Ocean Lakes girls look to clash for the first time this season with several Northern Virginia teams looking to make things interesting.

MileStat.com\'s Watchout List - Top 10 Girls XC Teams Brandon Miles Aug 12, 2007

MileStat.com's Brandon Miles takes a crack at the top 10 girls cross country teams in the state for this upcoming season. The top 5 of the 10 are revealed on Sunday with the remaining 5 to be posted on Monday. No surprise with Midlothian on top as the Lady Trojans will have one of the country's most fearsome top sevens in the nation. Midlothian pulled off the huge victory last year at Manhattan Invite and gained valuable experience with a top 10 finish at Nike Team Nationals to better prepare for a likely return trip this fall. The Lake Braddock girls, who had a group last year which would have been Virginia's best any other year if it was not for the Midlo girls, return another team with plenty of firepower with four sub 11:30 3200 meter gals including Christine Moore (pictured left by John Herzog). The defending AA state champions of Blacksburg look to firmly establish themselves as the next team after Midlothian. Maggie Walker looks to be one of the squads to move further up the totem pole than others with a very strong front two in Susannah Piersol and Clarissa Schick and possibly give the Central Region a second year in a row of two of the three podium teams in AAA. Brentsville has a solid core of five back from their tough second place finish to Blacksburg in the AA state race and will look to thrive in the new underdog role and take back their title.  Complete top 10 teams list posted Monday 7:50 PM.
