Patrick Henry High School is bringing another class of hurdlers to Lynchburg this weekend with their Central Region champion hurdlers Jessica Shelton and Travis Phillips for the first annual Big Red Invitational hosted at Liberty University. With personal bests of 14.34 in the 100 high hurdles and 45.36 in the 300 low hurdles for Shelton and best times of 14.03 in the 110 high hurdles and 39.05 in the 300 intermediate hurdles for Phillips, the Patrick Henry pair of elite hurdlers finds themselves nearly a full second faster than their competition this weekend in the 100/110 hurdles race, while several seconds better than the second best seeds in the 300 hurdles.   (Photos by Tom Veazey)

Will Kendall of Midlothian has a goal for this outdoor season to be selected to participate in the prestigous Penn Relays in late April in the boys' high jump competition. In order to even be eligible to be potentially selected, Kendall needed to clear a height of 6'7" in the high jump this year. During the indoor season, Kendall made huge improvements to clear eventually over 6'6" and finish fourth for All-State honors in the Group AAA State Meet. With the deadline to meet the qualifying standard approaching for the Penn Relays, Kendall made the trip up Interstate 95 to compete individually at this Saturday's Brian Watkins I-95 Invitational in Stafford. Kendall got strong competition from another All-State caliber high jumper in Joseph Boyd of South County, but Kendall's only mission of the day was to give himself a shot at the Penn Relays, which he did with a successful clearance over 6'7". His excitement spilled over as he had a second big jump in the air springing from the high jump mat after realizing he cleared cleanly at a new personal best height (Photo by Brandon Miles).

KNIGHTS TRACK CLASSIC

Billy Boros from Kellam High School in Virginia Beach is arguably the best distance runners in the most Southeastern corner of Virginia, while Walker Mogen from Radford High School in Radford is one of the best distance runners in the most Southwestern corners of Virginia this year. Boros was willing to drive across state to meet Mogen in his neck of the woods to duel over 3200 meters at the Knights Track Classic in Salem. The Eastern Region cross country champion Boros did much of the leading and pacing, while both he and the two-time Group A state cross country champ Mogen broke away from the rest of the field. Mogen was unable to be dropped by the pace which Boros set though as Mogen outkicked him in the final stretch for a 9:28 3200 PR victory, while Boros earned the early season Group AAA state qualifier in second place at 9:29 (Photo by Andrew Kicinski)

NORFOLK ACADEMY MEET #1

Trinity junior Molly Breidenbaugh had so many races while running for Hanover High School where she just missed breaking 11 minutes despite racing against quality competition within the Central Region and the Group AAA state level. The irony that her first 11 minute 3200 meter race (she has run just under before once from a converted full 2 mile race) came without any competition in an early outdoor season icebreaker meet at Norfolk Academy on Friday with a magnificent 3200 PR run of 10:55.08. Breidenbaugh's time ranks her as the early season state leader and first under 11 minutes in Virginia in the very young spring track season.
