This weekend up at East Rock 68 individual and four team titles will be on the line. In those races will be athletes hailing from all over the state and from many different sized schools. Despite their small size, many of these schools pack quite a punch when it comes to producing star athletes.
Here are some of the biggest stars this weekend and below is the preview for the team competition.
In the first team title battle this weekend we have the 1A girls competition. Indoors it was the boys' team but outdoors it is the girls' time for Patrick Henry (Glade Spring). These athletes, coached by indoor coach of the year Mark Love, will certainly be ready to rumble this weekend.
Their greatest competitors will be Parry McCluer and Auburn high school who both look for points in different areas. Patrick Henry's strength comes from their wide breath of variety points. Meaning, they have scoring athletes in nearly every event and use a true team effort for their title hopes. The distance events will be most key though where Auburn will also want huge points.
In the 1A guys' competition things will also be close but here Auburn leads with Patrick Henry close behind. Indoors it came down to the 4x400m relay between these two and it likely could again. Auburn will take no chances this time around and really hammer at those distance points. PH will be trying in every other event but if Auburn distance takes care of business it is a wrap in our book.
Up in the 2A competition the Green Dragons of Maggie Walker are favored in both competitions. Their lead is not as big as it was years ago but it is still very large. They lead big by their stellar depth of great athletes. The biggest of which is MC Heinen who will likely look for 30 distance points over the two day competition.
Following them will be Wilson Memorial and George Mason on the girls' side and Central and Union on the guys' side.
